Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, welcomed its tenth cohort into the Doctor of Medicine program with a White Coat Ceremony. This event is a deeply symbolic tradition for medical students during which they take the Hippocratic Oath, marking the beginning of their academic and professional journey and reinforcing the values of commitment and professional ethics throughout their studies.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of MBRU; Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Acting Chief Academic Officer at Dubai Health and Acting Provost at MBRU; Professor Suleiman Al-Hammadi, Dean of the College of Medicine at MBRU; and Dr. Laila Al Suwaidi, Dean of Student Affairs at MBRU, along with MBRU faculty members, students, and their parents.

Dr. Amer Sharif congratulated the students on reaching this important milestone in their academic journey, emphasizing that MBRU leads the learning and discovery missions of Dubai’s first integrated academic health system, Dubai Health. He also introduced a new tradition, the Patient First Pinning Ceremony. As the primary value of Dubai Health, wearing the Patient First pin on the white coats underscores the students’ commitment to placing patients at the center of their medical practice, and serves as a reminder of the university’s core values: Respect, Excellence, Teamwork, Integrity, and Empathy.

Since its launch in 2016, the Doctor of Medicine program at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences has graduated 170 doctors, many of whom have joined residency and fellowship programs both within the UAE and abroad. The six-year program combines medical education with clinical training and scientific research.

Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi said: “The White Coat Ceremony, now in its tenth edition, represents an important milestone in the journey of our new students and reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to developing medical professionals who contribute to serving the community and enhancing the quality of healthcare in Dubai and across the UAE.”

She added: “Through our integrated academic health system, we ensure a connection between education, clinical practice, and scientific research, providing our students with the knowledge and experience that strengthen their skills and elevate their capabilities. Over the past ten years, we take pride in supporting the healthcare sector with highly qualified medical professionals across various specialities, contributing to the advancement of the health system.”
Dean Suleiman Al-Hammadi said: “The tenth cohort of the Doctor of Medicine program represents a continuation of the journey that began in 2016, followed by our graduates’ progression into residency and specialty programs. This new cohort continues this advanced academic path, contributing to the preparation of physicians qualified to enhance the quality of medical services.”

Students from Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, have once again made an impact on the global stage at the ‘Design for Change’ international bootcamp, organized by Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The 2025 edition convened more than 100 participants from six countries, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and the UAE, under the theme ‘Sustainability in Healthcare.’ Medical, nursing, design, and engineering students were immersed in this interdisciplinary and intercultural environment to develop innovative solutions that advance sustainability in the healthcare sector.

This year, MBRU’s Year 5 Doctor of Medicine (MD) student Sara Vidha and her team received the Best Problem-Solving Award for their solution to enhance energy efficiency in radiology departments. Krish Bhatia, a Year 2 MD student, and his team were nominated for the Best Team Strategy. This builds on MBRU’s success from last year’s bootcamp, where student projects received international recognition from Prototype4Humanity, and another earned Gold at the 2024 UNESCO Future Designer International Innovation Design Awards.

Dr. Yacine Hadjiat, Associate Professor of Innovation in Health Science and Digital Health at MBRU, and Head of Innovation and Digital Health, commented: “It’s truly inspiring to witness our students collaborate with peers from medicine, nursing, design, and engineering at this innovation bootcamp each year. The achievements of MBRU students at the International Innovation Bootcamp reflect a broader effort of Dubai Health to embed innovation across every level of its academic health system. As the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, MBRU contributes to this vision by equipping learners with the skills to apply innovation principles and design thinking methodologies. Scientists at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, have published the first Arab Pangenome Reference, marking a major milestone in both regional and global genomic research.  The study, released in Nature Communications, a leading scientific journal, provides a crucial foundation for advancing precision medicine and personalised healthcare for Arab populations, while also supporting the UAE’s National Genome Strategy, a 10-year initiative launched in 2023 by the Emirates Genome Council to advance personalised, preventive, and precision healthcare through cutting-edge genomic science.

The reference was built using high-quality DNA sequencing from 53 people of diverse Arab backgrounds in the UAE. The work, conducted in MBRU’s state-of-the-art Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG), uncovered over 110 million base pairs of novel DNA sequences and identified nearly nine million small differences and more than 235,000 larger structural differences specific to Arab populations that have not been reported before. These findings are significant, as global DNA references have historically underrepresented Arab populations — a gap this research helps to close.

The Arab Pangenome Reference supports national and regional precision medicine initiatives by enabling the development of population-specific biomarkers, risk models, and therapeutic targets. One notable discovery was the duplicated gene TAF11L5, found highly enriched in Arab individuals studied but absent from global references. This gene may play a role in regulating other genes and could have implications for understanding disease risk and individual variation in treatment response.

Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director General, Dubai Health Authority, and co-author of the study, said: “This achievement strengthens the UAE’s position in genomic science. By building a reference that reflects the genetic diversity of Arab populations, we are enabling more precise and equitable healthcare. It’s a foundational step towards realising the goals of our National Genome Strategy and ensuring that future medical innovations are shaped by data from our own communities.”

Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Acting Provost of MBRU, and co-author of the study said: “The capabilities of the CATG lab were central to the success of this project. From genetic sequencing to advanced bioinformatics, every stage of the research was completed in-house. This level of integration gave us full control over quality and timelines, reflecting Dubai Health’s commitment to building world-class infrastructure and fostering national scientific leaders."

While genomic research has advanced rapidly over the past two decades, much of the foundational data has come from a narrow subset of global populations. This has created blind spots in how genetic risk is understood and addressed across different communities. The Arab Pangenome Reference contributes to a growing international effort to correct this imbalance by introducing high-quality data from a historically underrepresented population.

Dr. Mohammed Uddin, Director of CATG and Associate Professor of Genetics at MBRU, and senior author of the study, said: “This pangenome reference marks a major advancement in our understanding of Arab genomic diversity. It serves as a critical resource for both research discovery and clinical genome diagnostics, with lasting impact for future generations across the region.”

The project also developed ‘PanScan’, a bioinformatics tool to support more complex analysis of human pangenomes. Although not the central focus of the study, PanScan enables researchers to detect gene duplications, novel DNA changes, and complex DNA structures. Now publicly available on GitHub, a common resource used by scientists worldwide, the tool was created to support the Arab Pangenome Reference and similar efforts globally.

Dr. Nasna Nassir, lead author of the study and Assistant Professor at MBRU, said: “To support the Arab Pangenome Reference study, we developed PanScan, a tool designed to identify novel variants, gene duplications, and complex haplotype patterns specific to Arab populations. PanScan was key to uncovering unique genomic insights in our study and is now publicly available to support similar research globally.”

Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, part of Dubai Health, and the only children’s hospital in the UAE, has completed over 100 treatments for patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), with the first administered to a five-month-old patient in 2020. The latest recipient, Syrian child Yaqeen Ibrahim Kanaker received treatment supported by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.

The treatment involved a one-time intravenous infusion of Zolgensma. Administered at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital’s specialized infusion unit, the therapy was completed within an hour. Post-treatment, the patient will undergo a short observation period followed by regular outpatient visits over the next few months to monitor progress and ensure optimal outcomes.

Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of the Dubai Health Women and Children’s Campus, said: “Reaching more than 100 treated cases of SMA reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to making world-class care accessible to all children. Dr. Haitham Elbashir, Consultant Pediatric Neurorehabilitation at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, said: “Zolgensma is a transformative therapy that offers children with SMA the chance to regain strength and function early in life. In Yaqeen’s case, the treatment is being delivered through a carefully coordinated, multi-specialty care plan. Our team will continue to monitor her closely in the weeks and months ahead to ensure the best possible outcome. Every case is unique, and our approach is always tailored to each child’s specific needs.”

The completion of over 100 SMA treatments at Al Jalila Children’s reflects the strength of Dubai Health’s specialized pediatric services and its commitment to delivering high-quality care for children with complex medical needs.

Dubai Health and GE HealthCare, a leading global medical technology and digital solutions innovator, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on enhancing Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) practices and co-developing innovative AI solutions to support clinical decision-making, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes across the UAE and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The collaboration combines Dubai Health’s academic and innovation expertise with GE HealthCare’s advanced technological capabilities to enhance medical education, strengthen clinical decision-making, and improve health outcomes throughout the UAE and the broader MENA region.

The MoU will establish Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) as a POCUS Education Center of Excellence and a pioneer in Point-of-Care Ultrasound education across the MENA region.

Key initiatives include: a ‘Train-of-Trainer (TOT)’ structured program to build capacity in certified facilitators and trainers. The Facilitator Training Program will also enhance the scalability and effectiveness of POCUS program delivery and execution across a broader geographical region, enabling wider participation of attendees, students, and delegates.

In addition, the collaboration will extend to the co-development of AI solutions through Dubai Health Innovations, which supports transformative solutions that enhance patient care, drive medical advancements, and improve health outcomes. This partnership will focus on the development and validation of emerging AI technologies in areas of mutual interest, such as radiology and computer vision, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy, streamline clinical workflows, and facilitate early detection of medical conditions. Through this joint effort, both parties seek to foster innovation, accelerate adoption of cutting-edge AI tools, and contribute to the advancement of healthcare delivery in the region.

The MoU between the two parties will be in effect for two years and is renewable by mutual agreement.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, today met with the top-performing graduates of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) at the Union House in Dubai.

The 2025 graduating class comprises 164 students from 30 nationalities, across 30 academic programmes. Among them are 129 female graduates, including 52 Emiratis.

Dubai Health’s Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital, the first integrated, comprehensive cancer hospital in Dubai, was awarded Gold in the Future Healthcare Projects category by World Architecture News in March 2025.

The World Architecture News Awards are designed to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding architecture on an international scale and are judged by a panel of international experts. The 2024 Future Projects: Healthcare category specifically honors projects that are innovative, visionary, and imaginative prior to construction completion.

David Martin, Project Architect and Global Design Director for Stantec, the architectural firm behind the hospital’s design, said, “We are honored to see our design of the new hospital win this prestigious award. The project challenged us to create a space that not only meets the functional requirements of a modern healthcare facility but also fosters a healing environment for patients and the care team alike. The hospital’s patient-centered approach is reflected in its architectural concept, which draws inspiration from the UAE’s national tree, the Ghaf, a symbol of resilience and life. Feedback from cancer patients, informed the design that blends clinical functionality with emotional well-being. Central to the facility, an open-air courtyard with greenery that brings in natural light, creating a calming environment.

Located in Dubai Healthcare City Phase 2, the 59,000 square meter hospital is set to host 53 clinics, 21 clinical research areas, 60 infusion rooms, 10 urgent care rooms, 5 radiotherapy rooms, and 116 inpatient beds. Designed with well-being and environmental sustainability in mind, it will also feature 19 tranquil gardens for patients, their families, and the hospital community. Once completed, the hospital will serve as a center of excellence for cancer treatment and research, and will offer a comprehensive range of services, from early diagnosis to treatment and supportive care, all delivered by multidisciplinary teams. Research and clinical trials will be central to its mission, driving the discovery of evidence-based treatments and personalized therapies aimed at improving patient outcomes.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Health and Chancellor of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), attended the graduation ceremony of MBRU’s Class of 2025, the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The ceremony honoured 164 graduates representing 30 academic programmes across the Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine, Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery, the College of Medicine, and the Deanship of Graduate Medical Education.

The university also marked a key milestone with the graduation of the first cohort from Dubai’s only Biomedical Sciences PhD programme, along with six graduates from the new Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education.

Enhancing healthcare capabilities

His Highness congratulated the graduates and their families, emphasising that the university continues to play a vital role in strengthening the healthcare sector by developing highly skilled professionals dedicated to driving positive and sustainable change in the community. His Excellency Professor Alawi Al-Sheikh Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and guest of honour, addressed the attendees during the ceremony, saying: "Our leadership’s commitment to human development and knowledge is not a recent endeavor, it is a deeply rooted legacy that has shaped the very identity of our nation. The late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, captured this vision when he said that building people must come before building factories, and that human development must precede infrastructure.

This wisdom dates back nearly a century, when the late Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum sent the first student from Dubai to study medicine abroad, fully aware that investing in minds is the most valuable investment of all. This vision was carried forward through institutional progress, including a pivotal moment in October 1970, when the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum ordered the establishment of the Department of Health and Medical Services, with a strong focus on education and professional training."

In his address, Professor Dr. Alawi shared a series of inspiring messages with the graduates, reminding them that compassion lies at the heart of healthcare. He called on them to lead with humility, describing it as one of life’s greatest teachers, and to remain open to continuous learning and discovery. He encouraged them to uphold integrity, to trust in the moral compass rooted in their values, and reminded them that a person’s true worth is measured by their generosity and kindness to others.

Our years at MBRU have been filled with growth and learning. We now embrace the responsibility of serving our community with integrity, advancing purposeful scientific research, and contributing to collective progress. On behalf of my fellow graduates, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to our leaders, faculty, and families, who have inspired and guided us throughout this journey. We are committed to living up to the trust you’ve placed in us and to carrying our responsibility with dedication."

Since its founding in 2016, MBRU has contributed more than 1,800 scholarly studies, with 84% published in leading Q1 and Q2 indexed journals. The University has also earned a Group 1 ranking within the Ministry of Education’s National Higher Education Institutions Classification Framework.

It has also established five advanced research centres that drive healthcare innovation and scientific discovery: Center for Protein Engineering, Center for Innovation and Technology, Center for Microbial Sciences, Center for Applied and Translational Genomics, and Center for Space and Aviation Health.

Dubai is shaping a healthcare ecosystem that places people at its heart—one that is innovative, inclusive, and deeply human-centred, said Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU).

He attributed the remarkable progress of Dubai's health sector to the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.

These insights were shared during a media briefing hosted by the Government of Dubai Media Office as part of its ‘Meet the CEO’ series. Dr. Amer Sharif highlighted healthcare progress in Dubai from its early beginnings in the 1940s, culminating in the creation of its first integrated academic health system under Law No. 13 (2021). He also noted the adoption of the Integrated Physician Practice model across all facilities to enhance patient safety, reduce wait times, and improve clinical care management, aligning with Dubai’s vision and the Dubai Social Agenda 33 for a sustainable, human-centred system.

Strategic Vision and New Institutional Identity
Dr. Sharif detailed Dubai Health’s vision, mission, and strategic programmes to establish global benchmarks in evidence-based care. He introduced the ‘Dubai Health’ brand identity, drawing on Dubai’s heritage and symbolized by arches welcoming all. The central arch signifies Care, flanked by Learning and Discovery, all underpinned by Giving.

Community Engagement
Dr. Sharif reiterated Dubai Health’s commitment to strengthening community partnerships by involving patients and the public in shaping healthcare services. Key initiatives include ‘Dubai Health Majalis: Voice of the Community’ and the Press Ganey programme, which captures insights across every stage of the patient journey to enhance care quality and patient experience. These efforts align with the national ‘Year of Community 2025’ campaign.

Flagship Projects
Dr. Sharif emphasised Dubai Health’s role in advancing healthcare through globally aligned initiatives. Among them is the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital, set to transform cancer care through early detection, advanced diagnostics, and holistic treatment. Designed with input from cancer survivors, the project won a WAN Gold Award for ‘Future Projects – Healthcare.’ Additionally, five research centres are being developed to support scientific discovery, with three already operational. An upcoming Diabetes Centre will further Dubai’s goals for personalised, predictive care.

Leveraging AI and Advanced Technologies
Dubai Health is leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced technologies in line with the Dubai Artificial Intelligence Strategy for the Health Sector 2025–2028. It has launched 37 high-priority AI initiatives focused on five core areas, including enhancing patient experience, improving access to care, and increasing diagnostic accuracy, among others.

Academic Excellence
MBRU, Dubai Health’s Academic and Discovery arm, was ranked in Group 1 of the National Higher Education Institutions Classifications and secured three grants under the Dubai Future Foundation’s RDI Programme. Dr. Sharif noted that 10% of faculty were ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists in 2024 by Stanford University. The university has published 1,811 research papers, with 84% in top-tier Q1 and Q2 journals.

He also emphasised the need for greater media coverage and specialised language to highlight the depth and impact of academic and scientific work.

Strategic Partnerships
Through Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, Dubai Health partners with the U.S. based Children’s National Hospital to advance paediatric oncology, technology, and training. It has also signed MoUs with top institutions like the UK’s Royal Marsden Hospital for cancer care collaboration, and UMass Chan Medical School for joint research, education, and clinical work. In 2024, Dubai Health launched the Dubai Health Leadership Academy with the University of Oxford to develop future healthcare leaders.

Additionally, it partnered with Emirates Group to integrate hospitality best practices into patient experience through cross-industry collaboration.

Transformative Giving
Dr. Sharif shared that Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, recorded outstanding performance in 2024, raising AED177.65 million in support of Dubai Health’s mission to impact lives and shape the future of health.

He further noted: “As part of its efforts to support education, Al Jalila Foundation awarded 13 scholarships for the first time in 2024. It also expanded its strategic partnerships by signing several MoUs with local charities and organisations.”

Health Operations Centre and Patient Journey
Dr. Sharif highlighted the Health Operations Centre’s role in overseeing patient pathways from entry to recovery, reflecting Dubai Health’s “patient-first” ethos.

Between 2022 and 2024, Dubai Health achieved significant growth in service uptake. A cornerstone of this progress is the Patient Journey Redesign initiative, prioritising 45 care pathways (covering around 68% of patients) across emergency, specialised, and preventive care.

Exponential Growth
Dubai Health recorded remarkable growth across several performance indicators during 2024. Home medication deliveries increased by 189%, reaching approximately 109,000 in 2024, up from 37,724 in 2022.

The Patient Transport Service, which provides dedicated transportation for patients between their homes and Dubai Health’s facilities, saw a significant increase in beneficiaries, rising from 862 in 2023 to 5,365 in 2024.

The medical home visits programme saw a 68% increase, reaching a total of 90,816 visits over the three years, up from 23,277 in 2022 to 39,114 in 2024.

From 2022 to 2024, Dubai Health delivered 256,350 telemedicine services. The number of services rose from 78,969 in 2022 to 92,930 in 2024, representing a 17.7% increase.

Over the past three years, Dubai Health’s call centre professionally handled approximately five million calls. In 2024, customer satisfaction reached 93.1%, marking an 8% increase compared to 2023.

Dubai Health marked International Nurses Day by hosting a ceremony honoring its 4,400-strong nursing team, including 12 recipients of the international DAISY Award for clinical excellence and compassionate care. The event, held at the Grand Hyatt Dubai, welcomed more than 1,500 nurses from across Dubai Health’s hospitals and centers.

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai, who joined Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health; Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU); and Dr. Tarek Fathey, Chief Clinical Officer at Dubai Health.

The event also featured a special recognition to GDRFA Dubai for its achievement in receiving the Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart Government Flag, attended by Major General Talal Al Shanqeeti, Assistant Director-General for the Airports Sector. Dubai Health commended Lieutenant General Mohammed Al Marri and the GDRFA Dubai team for their people-first approach and alignment with the UAE leadership’s vision.

Dr. Sharif also welcomed the 16 graduate nurses who have transitioned to clinical practice at Dubai Health, reinforcing the organization’s ongoing investment in healthcare talent.

Dr. Tarek Fathy, Chief Clinical Officer at Dubai Health, said: “Our nursing team continues to grow in strength and diversity, with more than 4,400 nurses now serving across our facilities. This year, 16 newly graduated Emirati nurses will begin their careers across Dubai Health’s hospitals and centers, joining 120 Emiratis across the system. The number of Emirati nurses has increased by 200% since 2022, reflecting our commitment to developing national talent while delivering high-quality patient care.”

He noted that more than 1,500 Dubai Health nurses were nominated for the DAISY Award this year, which honors nurses who demonstrate exceptional clinical expertise and a commitment to patient-centered care. In addition, 26 nursing educators were recognized for their role in advancing clinical excellence and supporting workforce development.

Chaired by Ahmed bin Saeed and attended by Mansoor bin Mohammed, Dubai Health Board reviewed three-year milestones in advancing patient-centred care.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Health, chaired a meeting of Dubai Health’s Board of Directors, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Health, to review Dubai Health’s achievements over the past three years and their impact on improvements to access to care and the patient experience.

The meeting, held at Dubai Health’s headquarters, was attended by Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, His Excellency Abdulla Abdul Rahman Al Shaibani, Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, His Excellency Walid Saeed Al Awadhi, Mohammed Hassan Al Shehhi, Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, and Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, representing the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU).

At the outset of the meeting, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum welcomed the board members and commended their efforts to foster a culture of continuous improvement of healthcare services in Dubai. His Highness expressed his appreciation to the teams across Dubai Health for their dedication, which contributed to achieving a customer happiness score of over 90% in the 2024 Dubai Government Customer Happiness Index - a reflection of Dubai Health’s commitment to delivering integrated, high-quality healthcare services.

Following the meeting, Their Highnesses toured Dubai Health’s Operations Center, where they were briefed on the Patient Journey Redesign Program — a strategic initiative to enhance care delivery across the integrated academic health system.

Health Operations Center overview

During the tour of the Health Operations Center, Khalifa Baqer, Chief Operating Officer of Dubai Health, presented a comprehensive overview of progress achieved from 2022 to 2024. He noted measurable growth in patient-focused services, aligned with Dubai Health’s primary value of ‘Patient First.’

Community Health Services:

Approximately 5 million calls were professionally managed over three years, demonstrating high levels of responsiveness and operational readiness in meeting community healthcare needs.

Redesigning the patient journey

Dubai Health’s Patient Journey Redesign Program is designed to follow the patient’s care pathway from entry into the system to treatment completion, ensuring a seamless and coordinated experience across all stages of care.

The initiative focuses on optimising 45 priority care pathways — covering approximately 68% of the patient population — including emergency, specialised, and preventive care journeys.

Developed in direct response to community feedback and insights regarding healthcare experiences, the initiative aligns cross-disciplinary efforts and leverages data to reinforce Dubai Health’s future readiness and commitment to delivering integrated, high-impact services.

In line with the UAE’s ‘Year of Community’ theme for 2025, Dubai Health has launched the Community Majalis initiative. These community engagements are designed to bring residents and Dubai Health teams together in direct conversation through scheduled gatherings in residential neighborhoods. The initiative encourages community members to share feedback, raise concerns, and offer suggestions, empowering them to play an active role in shaping the future of healthcare and services provided by Dubai Health.

The first Community Majalis was held in Jumeirah on Wednesday, April 23. Moving forward, sessions will be held monthly in neighborhoods across Dubai, ensuring sustained engagement with diverse communities throughout the city.

Part of this includes the recent introduction of the globally acclaimed 'Press Ganey' program, which measures patient experience by incorporating surveys tailored to each treatment journey to support strategic plans, enhance service quality, and boost patient satisfaction."

Feedback gathered during these sessions will inform actionable improvements, ensuring that Dubai Health’s services are guided by the voices and experiences of the people it serves.

Dubai Health has announced the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Framework (ALiF), the first comprehensive framework developed in the UAE to advance AI literacy in professional environments. A first-of-its-kind initiative in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, ALiF underscores Dubai Health’s commitment to innovation and continuous learning. Developed at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which leads the Learning and Discovery missions of Dubai Health, ALiF offers a structured blueprint for understanding, evaluating, and effectively applying artificial intelligence across sectors. The announcement was made during Dubai AI Week 2025, organised by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence, an initiative of the Dubai Future Foundation.

The event is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation. ALiF provides a regionally grounded, globally relevant approach to building competence on the fundamentals of AI, ethical considerations, critical evaluation, and practical application skills. While it initially focuses on roles central to Dubai Health, such as healthcare, education, and research, it is designed to be expanded across various sectors.

ALiF’s development in Dubai reflects the UAE’s growing leadership in AI education and aligns with the broader digital transformation agenda.

Professor Alawi Alsheik-Ali, Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost at MBRU, said, “As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how we live, learn, and care for one another, AI literacy has become essential. ALiF equips all learners with the understanding and confidence to engage with AI in ways that are both informed and responsible. By building this framework in Dubai, we are building regionally tailored digital fluency and strengthening a culture of continuous learning in our communities.” 

ALiF begins with the AI Launchpad, a free, online, entry-level course that introduces foundational concepts and real-world applications of artificial intelligence. From there, participants can build competencies and expertise through five role-specific mastery tracks tailored for learners, educators, researchers, clinicians, and administrators. The Strategic AI Leadership track equips professionals to lead AI transformation within their organisations. All online courses are certified and delivered through three progressive levels, Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced, and allow participants to learn at their own pace.

The launch of ALiF builds on MBRU’s legacy of open-access, continuous learning initiatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the university introduced the Community Immunity Ambassador programme, empowering over a million participants to become informed advocates for public health and safety. Through this UAE-developed framework, Dubai Health is contributing to sustainable digital transformation and ensuring that technology advancements enhance healthcare delivery and improve outcomes for patients and their families.

Dubai Health has launched the Press Ganey Patient Survey Program across its integrated academic healthcare system, reaffirming its commitment to advancing patient-centered care and clinical excellence.

The initiative is built around four core objectives: measuring patient perceptions across healthcare facilities, identifying actionable improvements, benchmarking performance against leading regional and international healthcare systems and enhancing key areas of service.

The survey will be deployed across care settings within Dubai Health, capturing feedback at each stage of the patient journey. These surveys are shared following patient interactions with healthcare services, allowing individuals to share valuable feedback and insights regarding the care they received.

Targeted patient groups include inpatients, same-day surgery patients, outpatients, emergency cases, dialysis patients, home healthcare recipients, telemedicine users, rehabilitation patients, and dental care recipients.

Scientists at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which leads the Learning and Discovery missions of Dubai Health, have identified a novel genetic disorder affecting children’s growth and development. Published in a leading journal, The American Journal of Human Genetics, this study identifies a problem in the FBXO22 gene, which causes various health issues in children, including growth restriction, intellectual disability, and other physical challenges. This discovery could enable more accurate diagnosis and genetic counseling, supporting informed family planning and long-term care for affected families.

Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU, said, “At Dubai Health, research is central to how we advance patient care and serve our communities. This study highlights the power of global collaboration and the impact of translational research at MBRU. We are proud to lead this important genetic discovery as part of a global collaboration and generate knowledge that holds real promise for patients and their families.”

The study included an international team of scientists and clinicians, led by Dr. Ahmad Abou Tayoun from MBRU. The team identified that mutations in the FBXO22 gene impair its function, leading to various developmental abnormalities. These include severe pre- and postnatal growth restrictions, intellectual disability, and additional complications affecting the cardiac, gastrointestinal, and skeletal systems.

Dr. Ahmad Abou Tayoun, Associate Professor of Genetics at MBRU and Director of Dubai Health’s Genomic Medicine Center, said, “This study demonstrates how genetic research on local populations can uncover the root causes of complex pediatric conditions, provide a framework for more accurate diagnosis and counseling, and contribute to global efforts to better understand the human genome. Through this discovery, we can provide a framework for more accurate diagnosis and genetic counseling, offering affected families meaningful answers to support future family planning. This work also highlights the importance of close collaborations with clinical teams, particularly the endocrinology team led by Dr. Nandu Thalange, who first identified and investigated the index case.”

The study included 16 cases from 14 families across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Lebanon. The team used advanced short- and long-read sequencing technology to study the children’s DNA and find the FBXO22 problem. The condition showed overlapping features with other known genetic disorders, further highlighting the critical role of FBXO22 in normal growth and development.

Dr. Fahad Ali, Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology at MBRU, said, “A key aspect of this study was identifying a unique marker in the blood that serves as a molecular fingerprint for this condition. This discovery could pave the way for a simple diagnostic test, enabling earlier detection and better support for affected families.”

The study was supported by funding from the Al Jalila Foundation, MBRU, and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Center of Excellence for Smart Health, among others. It reflects MBRU’s ongoing mission to address pressing health challenges through innovative research and global partnerships.

The MoUs were inked during a special event organised by Dubai Chambers in Mumbai. The signing ceremony formed part of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed’s official visit to India.

Strengthening business community ties
In a series of agreements that underscore the vital role of business communities in advancing collaboration and mutual growth, Dubai Chambers signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), and the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The MoUs were signed by His Excellency Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah, President and CEO of Dubai Chambers; R. Mukundan, Vice President of CII; Anant Goenka, Senior Vice President of FICCI; Jyoti Vij, Director General of FICCI; and Sunita Ramnathkar, Vice President of IMC.

The MoUs establish a framework for enhanced cooperation in several key areas. Dubai Chambers will support Indian businesses in establishing or expanding their presence in Dubai and provide strategic services aimed at accelerating the investment process. The three Indian entities will provide similar support to Dubai-based companies exploring business opportunities in India, including facilitating business matching services and networking activities. This support will also be extended during the pre- and post-expansion phases.

The agreements also outline collaboration in joint participation at trade fairs, investment missions, conferences, and exhibitions held in both markets. In addition, the parties have committed to the regular exchange of information and data on bilateral trade and business trends, helping to identify new opportunities and strengthen private sector cooperation. The MoUs align with Dubai Chambers’ strategy to promote international expansion and build bridges of cooperation with key global markets.

By enhancing institutional ties with India’s most influential industry bodies, the MoUs position the private sector as important drivers of the economic partnership, aligned with Dubai Chambers’ strategy to promote international expansion, competitiveness, and sustainable growth.

Future-ready supply chains
As part of efforts to reinforce UAE-India connectivity and future-proof global trade infrastructure, DP World signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RITES, a leading infrastructure, consultancy, and engineering firm under India’s Ministry of Railways. Signed by His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, and Rahul Mithal, Chairman and Managing Director of RITES, the agreement aims to harness the expertise of both organisations to develop resilient, tech-enabled supply chains and strengthen modern logistics and maritime capabilities, aligned with the long-term economic visions of both nations.

The agreement aims to further leverage the UAE-India Virtual Trade Corridor (VTC), a digital platform launched in September 2024 and developed in collaboration with RITES, to streamline customs, logistics, and regulatory processes between the two countries. The agreement opens the door to collaboration on projects spanning multimodal logistics parks, free trade zones, port connectivity, and rail freight solutions, supporting the two countries’ shared goal to build diversified trade routes that can withstand global disruptions and drive long-term economic growth.

Drydocks World, a DP World company, signed an MoU with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a leading Indian shipbuilding and maintenance facility, under India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The agreement, signed by His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem and Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL, establishes a framework for the joint development of ship repair clusters in Kochi and Vadinar, in India, as well as offshore fabrication, and collaborative marine engineering solutions. This partnership leverages the complementary strengths of both organisations and supports the goals of Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. It aims to contribute to modernising India’s maritime infrastructure, expanding its ship repair industry, and creating new employment opportunities.

Partnership for educational excellence
The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), one of Asia’s leading business schools and India’s top-ranked business schools, to establish a world-class IIMA campus in Dubai, marking a significant milestone in academic cooperation. The MoU was signed by His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, and Bharat Bhasker, Director of IIMA. The agreement seeks to support the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 by developing business leadership talent and contributing to the development of a globally competitive innovation ecosystem in the emirate.

The IIMA Dubai Campus is envisioned as a global centre of excellence for higher education, skill development, and innovation, serving the broader Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia regions. The campus will be developed in two phases. In the first phase, IIMA will be allocated space within the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), the region’s premier higher education hub, providing world-class educational resources designed to foster innovation and academic excellence. Under the agreement, IIMA aims to launch its One-Year Full-Time MBA Programme in Dubai later this year. In the second phase, IIMA will be allotted land for the establishment of a permanent campus, which is expected to become operational by 2029.

Advancing inclusive healthcare
In another agreement that furthers a common commitment to delivering inclusive healthcare, Dubai Health signed an MoU to establish the UAE-India Friendship Hospital (UIFH), a new not-for-profit initiative aimed at providing inclusive and accessible healthcare, in Dubai. The MoU was signed by Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, and Founding Trustees of the UIFH including Faizal Kottikollon, Chairman of KEF Holdings and Chairman of the UAE India Business Council - UAE Chapter (UIBC UC); Nilesh Ved, Chairman of Apparel Group and Founding Member of UIBC UC; Siddharth Balachandran, Executive Chairman of Buimerc Corporation and Founding Member of UIBC UC; Tariq Chauhan, Vice Chairman of EFS Facilities and Founding Member of UIBC UC; and Ramesh S Ramakrishnan, Chairman of Transworld Group.

The UAE-India Friendship Hospital (UIFH) is a joint philanthropic initiative endorsed at the leadership level by the governments of Dubai and India that aims to deliver high-quality, affordable healthcare services.  

An eighth agreement was formalised between the Dubai Medical University (DMU) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the country’s top-ranked medical institute. The cooperation  agreement, signed by His Excellency Eng. Yahya Saeed Lootah, Vice Chairman of the Board of DMU, and Ahamadulla Shariff, Head of the Department of Anatomy at AIIMS, aims to strengthen academic and research collaboration by promoting direct cooperation between faculty, administrative staff, departments, and research centres of both institutions.

Key areas of collaboration include student and staff exchange programmes, joint research in priority fields such as infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, and climate change, and the development of global health initiatives. The agreement also provides a framework for the exchange of academic materials and research publications. The agreement also covers cooperation with AIIMS in areas related to AI research, development, and digital transformation in medical education and healthcare.

Dubai Health's Latifa Hospital has received accreditation from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) under the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), highlighting the Dubai Health's commitment to enhancing maternal and newborn health. The accreditation underscores Latifa Hospital's adherence to international standards in safe and high-quality childbirth services, fostering a breastfeeding-friendly environment, and supporting maternal and child health through awareness programs and specialized healthcare services.

The delegation from The Royal Marsden, one of the world's leading cancer centres dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment, care and education, was led by its Chief Executive and National Cancer Director of NHS England, Dame Cally Palmer, accompanied by Chief Medical Officer, Professor Nicholas van As, and Clinical Director of Genomics, Dr. Angela George.

Dubai Health organized the second edition of 'Clinic of Hope' initiative at Al Jalila Children's Hospital, providing essential free medical care to 300 children in need across more than 20 specialised fields.

Led by Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, 'Clinic of Hope' was held in conjunction with Zayed Humanitarian Day and in support of the ‘Year of the Community’, reflecting the leadership’s vision for a cohesive and prosperous society.

The organisation of the clinic reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to advancing health for humanity by providing free medical check-ups and supporting patients facing financial hardship. It also aligns with its ‘Patient First’ promise, reinforcing its mission to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare.

The ‘Clinic of Hope’ initiative was supported by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, which distributed gifts to children. The Emirates Literature Foundation hosted storytelling and educational sessions for young patients, while beloved mascots Salem and Salama added to the excitement.

Expanding Charitable Healthcare

Comprehensive Pediatric Specialties

Throughout the full-day event, children received specialised healthcare services across more than 20 medical disciplines, including general pediatrics, endocrinology, genetic and metabolic disorders, allergy and immunology, nephrology, neurology, psychiatry, orthopedics, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, dentistry, ENT, pediatric surgery, and pediatric plastic surgery.

Dubai Health has launched the second edition of its Ramadan Sports Tournament, bringing together 12 government and private sector entities. The 2025 tournament is part of Dubai Health’s ongoing efforts to promote fitness, well-being, and an active lifestyle, while fostering team spirit and engagement among employees and partners in a competitive and healthy environment during the holy month of Ramadan.

Taking place from March 3 – 18, 2025 at the Dubai Health Sports Complex, the tournament hosts teams from Dubai Health, Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Towers team (comprising the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, The Executive Council, and the Museum of the Future), Emirates Health Services, Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, Dubai Media, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), American Hospital Dubai, Mediclinic Middle East, and ADH Catering.

Khalifa Baqer, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Health, stated: “The launch of the second Ramadan edition of the Dubai Health Sports Tournament embodies our dedication to cultivating a positive and engaging workplace environment while promoting well-being and teamwork. Organ Donation and Transplantation at Dubai Health:
Dubai Health's Rashid Hospital, recognized for its specialized trauma and emergency care services, has emerged as the leading organ donation center in the UAE, facilitating over 200 transplants, impacting lives in the UAE and beyond. This accomplishment stems from the selfless generosity of over 65 families choosing to give the ultimate gift of life. To further support these vital decisions in Rashid Hospital, Dubai Health opened a dedicated Hayat lounge. This compassionate space provides families with a private and comforting setting to discuss organ donation with healthcare professionals.
 
Additionally, Dubai Health offers specialized care for organ failure patients, particularly kidney transplantation surgeries and dialysis services at Dubai Hospital, Al Jalila Children's Hospital, Al Towar and Al Barsha Dialysis Centers. Since 2016, Dubai Health surgeons have performed over 160 kidney transplants, with 54 of these surgeries conducted for children.

Dr. Maria Gomez, Director of the National Centre for the Regulation of Human Organs and Tissues Transplantation of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, pointed out that the concerted efforts of the local and federal authorities in supporting the donation and transplantation of human organs and tissues is a fundamental requirement for developing healthcare services and one of the main pillars for the development of the Hayat program to support organ transplantation in the UAE.
 
Dr. Gomez also commended the crucial role of all public and private hospitals in the country, including Dubai Health hospitals. Additionally, she lauded the contributions of other public and private hospitals working alongside local health authorities, including the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Mubadala, Emirates Health Services, Sharjah Health Authority, and the private sector nationwide.

Offering Hope to Kidney Failure Patients
For those navigating the organ transplantation journey, Dubai Health remains dedicated to providing the highest quality of care and hope. Al Jalila Foundation launched the second edition of its kidney transplantation fundraising campaign, Your Donation Saves Lives. The 2024 campaign successfully raised over AED 46 million to support more than 65 kidney failure patients with life-saving surgeries, dialysis, and post-transplantation care. The first edition of the campaign, launched in 2021, managed to fund approximately 30% of all kidney transplants in Dubai. Al Jalila Foundation, which leads the giving mission of Dubai Health, has partnered with the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) and Emarat al Youm to raise awareness for this cause within the community.  Contributions to the campaign are being accepted through Al Jalila Foundation's A'awen program, allowing donors to support directly patients in need.
 
Community Education in Organ Donation
Beyond patient care, community awareness and education are central to Dubai Health's efforts to support the nation's organ donation and transplantation program, Hayat. Throughout last year, Dubai Health actively participated in global observances of kidney transplantation and organ donation. These activities included educational sessions on organ donation and transplantation and the First Middle East Ata’a Al Hayat Course on Organ Donation organized by MOHAP and hosted at MBRU. This focus on learning extends to the broader community as well. First-year medical students at MBRU created a storybook to explain organ donation to young audiences. Dubai Health hosted reading sessions for this storybook, ‘Ahmed's Big Adventure,’  at its Nad Al Hamar Health Center, to teach visiting children the concept of organ donation and its impact.

The center will focus on developing, testing, and scaling healthcare solutions in four key areas with dedicated labs in AI and Data, Robotics and Sensors, Digital Medicine, and Design4Health—a human-centered approach to reimagining patient care. The initiative will ensure that Dubai Health remains at the forefront of innovation in health sciences with the support of strategic partnerships across the private sector and leading academic and health organizations in the UAE, United States, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Creation of a comprehensive genetic representation for more than 2.5 billion people across the Middle East and South Asia could make a major contribution towards advancing precision medicine, a publication in Nature Medicine reveals.

Traditional genetic research has mainly relied on linear reference genomes, which is like having a single, standard version of human DNA that scientists compare everyone's genetic information against. This works well for studying individual genetics but does not capture all the complexities and differences found in diverse populations.

The Arab Pangenome Reference (APR) takes a different approach. Instead of relying on just one "standard" genome, it includes a collection of many different genetic versions specific to the Arab population. This helps scientists see the full picture of genetic diversity, including variations and unique traits that might be missed using the old method.

The international group of researchers led by the Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG) at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, in partnership with the University of Birmingham, Dubai published their findings today (4 Mar) in Nature Medicine. Authors included Nasna Nassir, Mohamed A. Almarri, Hosneara Akter, Hamda Hassan Khansaheb, K. M. Furkan Uddin, Ahmad Abou Tayoun, Stefan Du Plessis, Marc Haber, Alawi Alsheikh-Ali and Mohammed Uddin. Nature Medicine is recognized for its rigorous peer-review process and its commitment to disseminating high-quality studies and opinion pieces that advance our understanding of human health.

Dr. Mohammed Uddin Director of the Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG) at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, commented: “The APR is the first reference genome constructed to capture the genetic diversity among Arabs. This landmark resource aims to enhance early diagnosis and personalized treatments for genetic diseases that are prevalent in the region. This research uncovered millions of base pairs of novel human DNA sequences, which will contribute to a deeper understanding of the genetic origins of diseases and traits. Our goal is to construct graph pangenomes encompassing the entire Middle East and South Asia, aiming to accelerate the adoption of precision medicine in these regions.”

Co-author Marc Haber, from the University of Birmingham Dubai, commented: “The precision offered by pangenomic approaches is particularly beneficial for studying rare and previously undetected disease-causing variants which paves the way for better understanding and treatment of these conditions, leading to new discoveries in population genetics, disease susceptibility and drug response.”

As UAE Innovates 2025 marks a decade of innovation, Dubai Health has launched a series of initiatives that bring together global expertise, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the latest technologies to enhance patient care. These initiatives reinforce Dubai Health’s commitment to care, learning, and discovery by equipping students and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to drive innovation.

Under Dubai Health’s Learning mission, the Design4Health Bootcamp is designed to empower the next generation of healthcare innovators. This intensive three-day program, hosted by Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, invites students from medicine, bioengineering, computer science, and design backgrounds to develop transformative solutions that enhance patient experiences within Dubai Health. Under the mentorship of global experts, these students will apply design-thinking methodologies to prototype and test their healthcare innovations. This bootcamp was organized with the American University of Sharjah (AUS), the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre in Scotland, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Hani Asfour, Vice President of Innovation and Institutional Partnerships at DIDI, commented on the Bootcamp, “The Design4Health Bootcamp demonstrates how design thinking can be a powerful tool for innovation across disciplines. By bringing together students from medicine, bioengineering, computer science, and design, this initiative fosters creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving—key elements in developing impactful solutions for complex challenges. At DIDI, we believe that interdisciplinary approaches like this are essential in shaping the future of innovation.”

In addition to the bootcamp, Dubai Health is leveraging digital health and human-centered design to enhance patient experiences. A design-thinking workshop will equip primary care clinicians specializing in mental health with problem-solving methods and technology-driven approaches. Separately, a 48-hour AI hackathon will unite radiologists from Rashid Hospital with computer scientists to develop AI-powered stroke imaging solutions, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in collaboration with IBM.

Microsoft will enhance AI literacy with a Promptathon powered by Copilot, which will equip participants with the skills to integrate AI-assisted tools into their work.

Driving Healthcare Innovation with the Center for Technology and Innovation

Further cementing its leadership in healthcare innovation, Dubai Health is proud to announce the establishment of the Center for Technology and Innovation. Set to open later this year, this space will be dedicated to transforming research, ideas, and emerging technologies into real-world healthcare solutions that improve patient care and outcomes.

As Dubai hosts the sixth edition of DUBAI GAMES, a globally recognized community sporting event, Dubai Health has implemented a comprehensive medical readiness plan to ensure the health and safety of all participating athletes, organisers, and spectators. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Dubai Events Security Committee, underscores Dubai Health’s commitment to providing healthcare services and ensuring medical preparedness for major events in the city.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, DUBAI GAMES has established itself as a prominent international sporting event.

This year’s edition introduces a new identity, serving as an inspiring platform to promote healthy lifestyles and team spirit. This competition will feature 244 teams including: 84 teams in Battle of the Government Men; 26 teams in Battle of the Government Women; 28 teams in Battle of the Community; and 50 teams in Battle of the Cities.

Khalifa Baqer, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Health, emphasized the commitment to ensuring seamless medical support, saying: “At Dubai Health, we are dedicated to deploying all necessary medical resources to ensure safety at the major events across the city. In collaboration with our partners at the Dubai Events Security Committee, our priority is to ensure that high-quality healthcare services are readily accessible, creating a safe and supportive environment for all attendees.”

Dr. Ahad Shaheen, Director of Events and Community Services at Dubai Health, highlighted: “Dubai Health has established a fully equipped field clinic at Dubai Festival City, staffed by a team of 40 medical teams and nurses specializing in emergency medicine and general healthcare, alongside a 10 member administrative team supporting operations. The clinic will provide comprehensive medical care throughout the four-day event from February 20 to 23.

She added: “Dubai Health has enhanced its rapid response capabilities in coordination with the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, ensuring preparedness across hospitals to accommodate any additional medical needs if required and uphold the highest standards of safety.”

Battle of the Juniors

In addition to supporting the main event, Dubai Health provided medical services for the Battle of the Juniors category. A specialized field clinic staffed by pediatricians from Al Jalila Children’s and emergency physicians from Rashid Hospital, was set up to support over 390 young athletes competing in 56 teams. A dedicated team of nursing professionals were also on hand to ensure the highest standards of care.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Dubai Health and Chancellor of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), chaired the meeting of Dubai Health's Board of Directors. The meeting, held in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai Health, emphasised the importance of global partnerships in supporting medical education and strengthening the healthcare sector.

The meeting, held at MBRU, was attended by Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, His Excellency Abdulla Abdul Rahman Al Shaibani, Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, His Excellency Waleed Saeed Al Awadhi, Mohammed Hassan Al Shehhi, Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, and Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali representing MBRU.

During the meeting, the board reviewed significant projects and achievements from the previous term, reaffirming Dubai Health's commitment to elevating healthcare standards and innovation in line with the Dubai Social Agenda 33.

A Decade of Partnership with Queen's University Belfast
The board also celebrated a decade of partnership between MBRU and Queen's University Belfast (QUB). Established in 2015, the collaboration was built on a shared vision for advancing healthcare education and research.
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum praised this partnership, highlighting it as a model for international academic cooperation, demonstrating Dubai Health’s commitment to positioning Dubai as a global healthcare hub. In recognition of this successful partnership, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum honoured Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, Dubai Health Board Member and Chancellor of QUB, for his contributions to strengthening the collaboration between the two universities. He wished the university continued success in its future endeavours.

His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Board, commended the success of Dubai Health's global partnerships, describing them as fundamental to the development of Dubai’s healthcare system. Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Chief Academic Officer at Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU, highlighted the tangible impact of the collaboration, stating: "Over the past decade, this partnership has led to the accreditation of several undergraduate medical programmes, sending numerous students on scholarships for advanced studies and training, and the establishment of the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery. It has also contributed to joint research initiatives and the development of MBRU's Biomedical Research Center."

New phase of expansion

Hall mentioned that the exhibition will enter a new phase of expansion starting from the next edition, with its new name, ‘World Health Expo Dubai (WHX Dubai),’ which is scheduled to be held at Expo Dubai.

The gala dinner’s programme showcased a variety of exceptional Emirati talents. To commemorate the occasion, souvenirs inspired by traditional Emirati culture, which were designed by Emirati artist Hessa Alghandi, were gifted to reflect the enduring impact of Arab Health through half a century. The evening’s entertainment included musical performances by pianist Ahmed Al Hashimi, an Emirati prodigy on the autism spectrum, and Emirati oud player Shamsa Al Jasmi. The menu included dishes prepared by Emirati chefs Saud Al Matrooshi and Arwa Lootah in collaboration with the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel.

The Arab Health Exhibition and Congress is held annually in Dubai, bringing together thousands of experts and specialists from around the world to showcase the latest innovations and technologies in the healthcare field, enhancing the UAE's position as a leading destination in this vital sector.

The 50th edition of Arab Health, held under the theme ‘Where the World of Healthcare Meets,’ is well on course to attract more than 60,000 visitors, hosting over 40 international pavilions, and bringing together more than 3,800 exhibitors from 180 countries.

A high-level delegation from Dubai Courts visited Dubai Health to gain insights into Dubai’s first integrated academic health system and discuss opportunities for cooperation.

Led by H.E. Professor Saif Ghanem Al Suwaidi, Director General of Dubai Courts, the delegation included senior officials from Dubai Courts. They were warmly received by Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), along with other senior representatives in Dubai Health.

Dubai Health welcomed Professor Yasmine Belkaid, the winner of the Great Arab Minds 2024 in Medicine, to deliver a lecture and engaging discussion at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU). Renowned for her groundbreaking research in immunology, Professor Belkaid shared transformative insights with a diverse audience of healthcare professionals and students.

During her lecture, ‘Microbiota Control of Immunity,’ Professor Belkaid shared her groundbreaking research on how the immune system differentiates between beneficial and harmful microbes. She also shared insights from her scientific journey, offering students valuable perspectives on tackling immune and infectious diseases through innovative approaches. With over 220 published studies in infection and immunity, Professor Belkaid has made significant contributions to sustainable solutions in healthcare and nutrition. The session generated enthusiasm among students and healthcare professionals, offering a valuable opportunity to learn from one of the world’s leading immunologists.

The session was attended by Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of MBRU; Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Chief Academic Officer at Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU, alongside students and healthcare professionals.

Professor Belkaid also toured research facilities at MBRU, including the Biomedical Research Center, the Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG), and the Biobank, where she expressed appreciation for the university's infrastructure and academic programs. New fellowship programs in Pediatric Nephrology and Vascular Neurology 

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, 15 JAN 2025: Dubai Health announced the opening of registration for its graduate medical education programs, including internship, residency, and fellowship training, at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU). For the first time, fellowship programs in Pediatric Nephrology and Vascular Neurology will be offered, aiming to develop highly skilled specialists and enhance healthcare education.

Professor Sulaiman AlEmran, Dean of Graduate Medical Education at MBRU, commented: “At Dubai Health, we are committed to delivering exceptional programs that enhance the expertise and capabilities of healthcare professionals. These initiatives reflect our dedication to preparing the next generation of leaders who will contribute to the advancement of the healthcare sector, and the addition of new programs reinforces our focus on delivering world-class medical education aligned with the highest international standards.”

Currently, MBRU offers 39 graduate medical education programs, including 20 residencies, 17 fellowships, and two internships. All are accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), the National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS) in the UAE, and the Arab Board of Health Specializations.

As part of the plan, Dubai Health will deploy 1,800 medical and administrative personnel across six hospitals and four clinics, ensuring uninterrupted access to high-quality healthcare services throughout the festivities. Facilities, including Rashid Hospital, Dubai Hospital, Al Jalila Children’s, Latifa Hospital, Jebel Ali Hospital, and Hatta Hospital, along with clinics in Nad Al Hamar, Al Barsha, Dubai International Airport, and Al Maktoum International Airport, will operate at full capacity. A fully equipped field hospital will be established near the Burj Khalifa, featuring eight treatment rooms and specialized teams in emergency medicine, internal medicine, surgery, and pediatrics. In addition, seven strategically located medical points, staffed by emergency specialists, will offer immediate care.

Dubai Health Dental Hospital Pediatric Dentistry Clinic has achieved the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), becoming the first healthcare facility in Dubai to do so. The strategic partnership aims to advance oral health and related technology development in Dubai by fostering research and learning opportunities for students and faculty at MBRU’s Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine (HBMCDM), aligning with Dubai Health’s evidence-based approach to advancing patient care.  The agreement was part of a broader visit by MBRU’s HBMCDM delegation to the United States, during which they engaged with leading academic institutions and explored avenues for international collaboration.

Through strategic partnership, Dubai Health and AFI will collaborate on joint research projects and student exchange programs to address oral health issues, ultimately improving dental care outcomes. Dubai Health has announced that eight Emirati scholars have secured residency training positions in Canada. This achievement was facilitated through Dubai Health’s Academic Mentorship Program at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences’ Deanship of Graduate Medical Education, which aims to cultivate the next generation of highly skilled healthcare professionals equipped to address the evolving demands of patient care.

This latest cohort brings the total number of Emirati scholars pursuing residency programs in North America through Dubai Health’s program to 38. The current group of scholars will specialize in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, and Diagnostic Radiology. Residency programs will range from three to five years, depending on the chosen speciality.

Held at the Mohammed bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which leads Dubai Health’s learning and discovery missions, the conference reinforces Dubai Health's commitment to advancing evidence-based research, fostering discovery, and enhancing healthcare standards.

Additionally, the research incorporates an analysis of the health economic implications for healthcare systems, suggesting that children born to mothers with diabetes may face increased risk of dental issues, such as tooth decay. Al Jalila Foundation, the giving arm of Dubai Health, announced that it has received a donation of AED11.3 million from renowned businessman and philanthropist His Excellency Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor. The pledge will help cover the annual cost of 4,000 dialysis sessions for needy patients residing in the UAE. Additionally, the donation will fund the renovation of the nephrology unit at Dubai Hospital.

The renovated nephrology unit will be named after the late Mohammed Khalifa Al Suwaidi in honour of his legacy of philanthropy and community service. The contribution for the unit comes from Al Suwaidi’s estate, which is managed by His Excellency Al Habtoor as per Al Suwaidi’s will. The funds are dedicated to support charitable and humanitarian projects and HE Al Habtoor has taken care to ensure that the resources are used to support initiatives that enhance lives, elevate healthcare services, and benefit society at large.
