Dubai Health and Johnson & Johnson MedTech have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a collaborative framework to advance professional education, drive sustainability initiatives, and support digital innovation in healthcare. 

The MoU was signed by Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), and Prosun Niyogi, Vice President and General Manager, Surgery Emerging Markets representing Johnson & Johnson MedTech. The signing was attended by Dr. Tarek Fathey, Chief Clinical Officer at Dubai Health. 

The collaboration is structured around three core pillars. The first focuses on professional education and capacity building through tailored training programs and train-the-trainer initiatives. The second advances sustainable development by expanding recycling programs across selected hospitals. The third supports the implementation of digital ecosystems that enable surgical video capture, secure content sharing, collaborative case planning, and telepresence-enabled remote collaboration and education.

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to driving meaningful progress in healthcare through knowledge exchange, innovation, and strategic partnership, ultimately supporting better outcomes for patients and communities. 

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Health Board of Directors, launched ‘The Cancer Fund’ of Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Health Board of Directors.

His Highness also unveiled ‘The Giving Wall’ at Dubai Hospital, which bears the names of donors who have supported its treatment programmes, in recognition of their generosity.

The Cancer Fund aims to provide vital support for cancer treatment, helping ease the financial burden on patients and ensuring they can continue their care throughout recovery.

The launch of The Cancer Fund took place during a ceremony hosted by Al Jalila Foundation at Dubai Hospital, where His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum honoured partners, donors, and supporters of the hospital’s treatment programmes.

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Director General of HH the Dubai Ruler's Court; Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Member of Dubai Health Board of Directors, and Chairperson of Al Jalila Foundation Board of Directors; His Excellency Dr. Alawi AlSheikh-Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority; His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU); and other senior officials.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed stated: “Giving is a deeply rooted value in the UAE instilled by our Founding Fathers and our leadership continues to build on this legacy through initiatives that place people’s health and wellbeing at the heart of national priorities.”

His Highness praised the individuals and institutions whose generosity strengthens community philanthropic efforts, noting that the strong engagement generated by such programmes reflects a shared national commitment to supporting people and enhancing quality of life.

Strategic step
Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg said: “The Cancer Fund marks a strategic step towards building a sustainable support system for patients.”

She added: “The Fund also reflects a forward-looking model of collaboration, with community and institutional giving playing a central role in strengthening our healthcare system and expanding its impact on patients’ lives. We believe that sustainable philanthropy is essential to building a more cohesive society, where collective efforts come together to shape a better future for all.”

Dr. Amer Al Zarooni, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, said: “Dedicating this year’s Ramadan campaign at Al Jalila Foundation to The Cancer Fund will expand support pathways available to cancer patients. It reflects the role of community giving in helping patients access timely treatment, in line with Dubai Health’s ‘Patient First’ promise.”

He added: “The generosity of donors enabled us to provide care to 650 cancer patients over the past year, with contributions exceeding AED43 million through the ‘A’awen’ programme.

Al Jalila Foundation encourages individuals and organisations to support the Ramadan 2026 campaign through its donation channels, emphasising that every contribution makes a difference for patients and their families by helping them access treatment.
 

His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Health Board of Directors, emphasised the importance of partnerships with leading academic health systems driven by scientific research and medical education to advance healthcare, elevate quality of care, strengthen patient safety standards, and build medical talent.
His Highness made these remarks during a meeting held on the sidelines of the World Health Expo (WHX) Dubai 2026, with Dr. Omar Lateef, President and CEO of Rush University System for Health and Rush University Medical Center, one of the world’s leading academic health systems. One of the world’s leading healthcare exhibitions, WHX Dubai 2026 is taking place from 9 – 12 February at the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC).

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and Dubai Health, represented by Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the Emiratization of healthcare professions by supporting Emirati students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs across various medical specializations at MBRU.
The MoU marks a significant step forward in a shared commitment to developing national healthcare talent. The signing ceremony was witnessed by His Excellency Dr. Alawi AlSheikh-Ali, Director General of Dubai Health Authority, and Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of MBRU.
Under the agreement, Dubai Health Authority will cover the tuition fees of a number of Emirati students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs across various medical specializations at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, including programs offered by the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Asma Al Sharif, Acting CEO of the Health Regulation Sector at DHA, and Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU, during World Health Expo Dubai 2026. 
Dr. Asma Al Sharif said: “The MoU provides significant momentum to our shared efforts to advance the Emiratization of healthcare professions and equip the health sector with highly qualified national talent capable of achieving the strategic goals of Dubai’s health system.”

Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi said: “This MoU reflects our commitment, together with Dubai Health Authority, to cultivating highly qualified national medical talent to lead the future of Dubai’s healthcare sector. By empowering Emirati students academically and professionally in vital specializations, including nursing, we strengthen the integration of our academic health system.”
She added: “The program will support students enrolled in the Medicine and Surgery programs, as well as those of the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery at MBRU, reinforcing essential healthcare career pathways.”
 

Dubai Health has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the non-profit research and development organization Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) at World Health Expo Dubai (WHX).

The agreement was signed by Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Dr. Luis Pizarro, Executive Director of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), in the presence of His Excellency Nicolas Niemtchinow, Ambassador of France to the UAE, and Thi Hanh Cao, Director of External Relations at DNDi.

The partnership establishes a framework for collaboration in medical education, research, and clinical training, with a shared goal of improving health outcomes for underserved populations affected by neglected infectious diseases. It brings together DNDi’s global expertise in needs‑driven drug discovery and development and Dubai Health’s integrated academic health system to support research and capacity‑building across priority global health areas.

Under the agreement, students from Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health will take part in DNDi‑led programs, including fieldwork and clinical research activities in Africa and Asia. These programs provide hands‑on exposure to patients affected by neglected diseases and to the full spectrum of drug discovery, development and public health delivery. DNDi experts will also contribute to MBRU academic programs, supporting two‑way academic and professional exchange.

The collaboration will begin with joint research scoping to identify priority projects. It will involve active faculty engagement through guest lectures, curriculum development, student co‑supervision, joint grant applications, and collaborative research publications.

The partnership will also encompass collaboration in drug discovery, clinical trials, regulatory science, and public health policy, with a particular focus on viral diseases, pandemic preparedness, and fungal infections. In addition, it will support joint initiatives in the application of artificial intelligence to health research, as well as the co‑organization of scientific conferences and workshops and the dissemination of knowledge on key global health challenges.

Dr. Luis Pizarro, said: “Neglected diseases disproportionately affect the world’s most vulnerable populations and are often overlooked by traditional research models. Through this partnership with Dubai Health, we aim to advance scientific progress while helping train the next generation of global health leaders to deliver more equitable health solutions.”

The Board of Directors of Dubai Health convened its first meeting of the year, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Health Board of Directors. The meeting was attended by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Health Board of Directors.

The Board reviewed progress across Dubai’s integrated academic health system and discussed key strategic projects and future initiatives aimed at advancing healthcare excellence.

Held at the Dubai Health headquarters, the meeting was also attended by Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, His Excellency Abdulla Abdul Rahman Al Shaibani, Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, His Excellency Walid Saeed Al Awadhi, His Excellency Mohammed Hassan Al Shehhi, Dr. Amer Sharif, and Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum welcomed the Board members, noting their role in advancing Dubai’s health system and supporting the objectives of the Dubai Social Agenda 33, which aims to create a sustainable human-centered system. His Highness commended the achievements of Dubai Health teams and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration in driving progress that advances the quality of care and life for the community.

His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum affirmed Dubai’s global position in healthcare, noting its continued progress in developing a system driven by knowledge, innovation, and professional excellence, and highlighting the role of Dubai Health as an integrated academic health system that brings together care, learning, discovery and giving to advance health for humanity.

Delivered in partnership with the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, the Program celebrated the graduation of 40 graduates during a ceremony held at the Museum of The Future.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum congratulated the graduates, highlighting the importance of investing in leadership capabilities that can contribute to the development of the healthcare sector. “Guided by the vision of our leadership, Dubai is advancing the future of healthcare by developing leaders who can navigate rapid change and transform it into meaningful opportunities for growth and innovation,” he said. “I congratulate all the graduates whose leadership will shape the future of health in Dubai and advance the quality of care and life for our community,” His Highness added.

He expressed his sincere gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for their support of the program, noting that the knowledge and experience gained by the graduates will be applied across the Dubai Health system.

He also thanked the program partners; Emirates, Dubai Airports, and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, in recognition of their valuable contributions which elevated the program’s impact and continue to inspire Dubai Health’s transformation journey.

The Systems Leadership Program brought together distinguished faculty and global experts who fostered thoughtful dialogue, encouraged reflection, and enriched participants’ understanding of leadership within complex health systems. Their progress throughout the program has been remarkable, and the capabilities they have developed will support Dubai’s continued pursuit of excellence and innovation for many years ahead.”

The Dubai Health Leadership Academy was launched in September 2024, alongside its inaugural Systems Leadership Program, delivered through a partnership with Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, with the aim of cultivating leadership talent capable of contributing to the advancement of the healthcare sector. It was designed based on the expertise of academics and specialists from around the world, alongside best practices, and was developed in alignment with the priorities and initiatives of Dubai Health, which served as a cornerstone for learning throughout the duration of the program.

Over 14 months, delivered through four modules, participants applied their learning in practice, supported by personalised executive coaching and insights from experts at Oxford Saïd Business School.

A delegation from the Dubai Sports Council visited Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, to learn about its sports philanthropy initiatives and discuss areas of collaboration. 

The delegation was led by His Excellency Khalfan Juma Belhoul, accompanied by His Excellency Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, and other officials. They were welcomed by His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences; Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences; Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of the Dubai Health Women and Children’s Campus; Khalifa Baqer, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Health, and Shamma Alrafi, Director of Fundraising and Community Engagement Programs at Al Jalila Foundation.

During the visit, His Excellency Khalfan Juma Belhoul learned about Al Jalila Foundation’s sports philanthropy initiatives and met with the Foundation’s “Champions of Hope” team, a group of athletes who leverage sports for humanitarian giving.
To date, the philanthropic sports initiatives have raised AED 15 million through more than 450 community and partner-led activities, with 100% of proceeds directly supporting Al Jalila Foundation’s programs. 
His Excellency Khalfan Juma Belhoul, said: “The Dubai Sports Council is committed to supporting all national efforts and charitable initiatives that aim to enhance the wellbeing, health, and active lifestyles of our community. His Excellency Khalfan Juma Belhoul met the “Champions of Hope” team, which included several inspiring athletes: Yahya Al Ghassani, UAE National Football Team player and founder of YA10 Academy; Ghani Souleymane, endurance athlete and Guinness World Record holder for the T100x100 challenge; Mustafa Kaan Yildiz, swimmer and junior coach at Heroes of Hope; Coach Dan Cordero, endurance cyclist and founder of LifeSpark Cycling; Keisha Pais, open-water swimmer who completed the 15-kilometer Bonifacio Strait swim from Italy to France; Ahmed El-Shennawy, member of the inaugural Team Al Jalila Kilimanjaro charity climb and leader of the Himalayan Charity Challenge; Essam Adams, the founder of “Run 4 A Purpose” running club; and Aarti Shah, an Athlete of Determination and member of Heroes of Hope.
 
The visit also featured the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with YA10 Academy, a sports academy founded by professional Emirati footballer Yahya Al Ghassani that supports emerging football talent. 

Yahya Al Ghassani said: “Through this partnership, YA10 Academy and Al Jalila Foundation will unite sports with philanthropy through athlete engagement and community challenges designed to raise awareness and funds for patient care. It embeds a culture of giving into the academy’s calendar, transforming every training session, match, and milestone into an opportunity for fans to support life-changing healthcare programs”.

Shamma Alrafi said: “For over a decade, we have seen how sports can go beyond the game to drive real change. By combining athletic spirit with charitable initiatives, we can support 
patients in need and inspire the community, showing how Dubai leads in using sports as a force for good.”

Dubai Health has announced the launch of 24-hour operations at Al Lusaily Health Center, starting January 1, 2026. The step came in response to feedback from community members during the “Dubai Health Majalis: Voice of the Community” initiative, which provides a platform for residents to engage directly in shaping healthcare services.

This expansion enhances Dubai Health’s network of around-the-clock health centers, improving access to healthcare services and strengthening the overall readiness of the healthcare system.

Dubai Health currently operates 14 ambulatory health centers across the city, providing a comprehensive range of primary healthcare services for all age groups. These centers offer multidisciplinary services, including preventive care, routine screenings, and the management of chronic conditions.

Khalifa Baqer, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Health, said: “The transition to round-the-clock operations at Al Lusaily Health Center forms part of a broader set of initiatives driven by community feedback gathered through the Dubai Health Majalis. This initiative was launched in alignment with the Year of Community 2025 and reflects our commitment to putting community feedback into action while ensuring the continuity and advancement of our healthcare service delivery.”
 

He added: “During the year, Dubai Health organized five community Majalis across different areas of Dubai, including Umm Suqeim, Al Khawaneej, Dubai Club for People of Determination, Al Rashidiya, and Al Lusaily, as part of our ongoing efforts to listen to and engage with the community.”

Dr. Ayesha AlBasti, Chair of Family Medicine at Dubai Health, said: “Operating Al Lusaily Health Center around the clock demonstrates our dedication to expanding accessible primary healthcare for the community, actively addressing the needs of Dubai residents. With this step, Al Lusaily Health Center will join the Nad Al Hamar, Al Barsha, and Dubai Airports medical centers, which also operate around the clock. The center will provide integrated medical care across several specialties, including family medicine and emergency care.”

Dubai Health Majalis

Dubai Health launched the “Dubai Health Majalis: Voice of the Community” initiative in support of the objectives of the Year of Community 2025. These engagements are designed to bring Dubai’s residents and the Dubai Health team together in direct conversation through scheduled gatherings in residential neighborhoods. The initiative encourages community members to share feedback, raise concerns, and offer suggestions, empowering them to play an active role in shaping the future of healthcare and services provided by Dubai Health.

Dubai Health announced the successful completion of 234 kidney transplant surgeries since the launch of its kidney transplant programme in 2016, achieving a success rate of over 95 percent and highlighting the impact of cross-sector collaboration.

Dubai Health’s kidney transplant programme is delivered in cooperation with federal, local, and private-sector partners, including the Ministry of Health and Prevention, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Healthcare City Authority, Dubai Airports, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, Dubai Customs, the Dubai Police General Command, Dubai Public Prosecution, and Mediclinic City Hospital, alongside other private healthcare partners. This initiative supports the national Hayat Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue, enabling access to life-saving treatments.

Since its inception, the programme has facilitated 234 transplants for patients of diverse nationalities, with children accounting for 31.2 percent of recipients. Of these procedures, 120 were performed at Dubai Health hospitals, 90 at Mediclinic City Hospital, and 24 at Al Qassimi Hospital.

His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), said: “These efforts highlight a collaborative approach across sectors in organ transplantation and reaffirm our commitment to delivering specialised care. Dr. Sharif added: “Guided by our ‘Patient First’ promise, we are committed to ensuring that every patient is given access to comprehensive treatment. This approach reflects a model of care and giving, where the programmes of Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, play a vital role in contributing to a better quality of life.”
The transplant recipients included patients of all ages, with kidneys donated by both living and deceased donors, reflecting growing community awareness of the life-saving importance of organ donation.

Multidisciplinary care

All transplant procedures at Dubai Health are delivered through coordinated, multidisciplinary care aligned with the highest standards and supported by comprehensive assessment, surgical treatment, and structured long-term follow-up.

Al Jalila Foundation supports patients through a range of healthcare programmes, including its ‘Your Donation Saves Lives’ initiative, which encourages organ donation and helps fund transplant treatment. To date, the programme has covered the treatment costs of 66 patients, representing 31.4 percent of all transplant patients in Dubai. Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, has introduced new nursing education programs through the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery (HBMCoNM).  The expansion aims to advance medical education and align with global standards in this vital field.

Expanded Academic Pathways in Nursing

MBRU’s nursing education pathways now span from undergraduate study to specialized academic training, beginning with the newly introduced Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Building on this foundation, students can specialize through a Master’s, Postgraduate Diploma, or Postgraduate Certificate in four fields: Cardiovascular Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Emergency Care Nursing, and Paediatric Nursing. Together, these offerings provide a comprehensive academic route for nurses seeking to build advanced clinical expertise.

In addition to the academic offerings at HBMCoNM, the College of Medicine at MBRU continues to offer a range of advanced academic degrees, including a six-year undergraduate Doctor of Medicine program, a four-year undergraduate Graduate Entry Doctor of Medicine program, a Master of Science and PhD in Biomedical Sciences, and a Master’s and Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education. Dubai Health announced that its Genomic Medicine Center (GMC) has earned accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the globally-recognized authority in laboratory quality assurance, marking a significant milestone that reflects its commitment to the highest global standards of quality, accuracy, and safety.

This accreditation is awarded following a precise evaluation conducted by a panel of experts to verify laboratories’ compliance with internationally recognized standards in the field. It is considered one of the world’s leading medical laboratory quality assurance programs, aimed at achieving the highest levels of excellence in laboratory practices.

Dr. Ahmad Abou Tayoun, Director of the Genomic Medicine Center at Dubai Health, expressed his profound pride in the center’s achievement in obtaining accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), a milestone that reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to the highest internationally recognized quality standards and its dedication to providing high-quality services to patients and physicians. Dubai, United Arab Emirates, XX December 2025: Dubai Health’s Al Jalila Children’s Hospital celebrated an inspiring moment as five-year-old Alexis O’Shea rang the hospital’s “Bell of Hope,” marking the end of her treatment and the beginning of a brighter chapter ahead. The ceremony, the hospital’s first, symbolizes the completion of a child’s cancer journey and the start of recovery filled with renewed strength and optimism.

This milestone moment crowned a nine-month treatment journey that began when Alexis was diagnosed with an advanced Wilms tumor that had spread to her lungs. She underwent an intensive and expertly coordinated treatment plan that included chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, overseen by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric surgeons, oncologists, therapists, nurses, and child-life specialists.

Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of the Women and Children’s Campus at Dubai Health, said: “Alexis’s recovery reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to delivering child-centered, integrated care that addresses medical, emotional, and social needs. Her journey highlights the essential role of multidisciplinary coordination, where expertise, compassion, and our ‘Patient First’ promise come together at every stage of treatment.”

His Excellency Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, attended the conference and honored researchers recognized in the “Best Oral Presentation” and “Best Research Poster” categories. The event was also attended by Professor Ian Bruce, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at Queen's University Belfast, and His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU).

Held over three days at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, the conference featured a series of scientific discussions, presentations, and workshops focused on research to improve health outcomes.

Professor Manuel Salto-Tellez, Professor of Molecular Pathology at Queen’s University Belfast, explored the applications of personalized medicine in oncology.

The ‘My Blood, for My Country’ campaign seeks to attract new, particularly first-time, blood donors to expand the Donation Center’s database, especially among individuals with rare blood types. The meeting was held at the headquarters of Dubai Health in the presence of members of the Dubai Health Board of Directors including His Excellency Abdullah Abdulrahman Al Shaibani, His Excellency Walid Saeed Al Awadhi, His Excellency Mohammed Hassan Al Shehhi, Dr. Amer Sharif, and Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi. Dubai Health organized a specialized training program, Essential Skills in Organ Donation, to enhance the capabilities of healthcare professionals involved in organ donation and transplantation, ensuring alignment with global medical standards.

Endorsed by the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, and Dubai Health Authority, participants earned a professional certificate from Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, in addition to 35.5 credit hours in continuing medical education (CME) accredited by the Dubai Health Authority. A total of 55 physicians, nurses, technicians, and organ donation coordinators from across the UAE took part in the program.

The two-day program, held at MBRU, was attended by His Excellency Dr. Rashed Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Center; His Excellency Dr. Ali Abdulkarim Al Obaidli, Chairman of the UAE National Committee for Organ Donation and Transplantation;  Dr. Maria Gomez, Director of the National Centre for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues; Dr. Hanan Obaid, Director of Health Policies and Standards Department at the Dubai Health Authority.

Specialized Program

The specialized program took place at MBRU’s Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center, where participants engaged in realistic scenarios that reflected real-life situations. The hands-on approach allowed them to practice their roles, strengthening their readiness and improving their skills in managing organ donation cases with confidence and professionalism.

The program also included a series of theoretical sessions and practical workshops that provided comprehensive training on the essentials of human organ donation, aligned with the latest global practices in the field.

The training program was presented by specialists in critical care from the National Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation, Emirates Health Services, The Ministry of Presidential Affairs Medical Office, SEHA- Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, and Dubai Health. It primarily targeted licensed healthcare practitioners, including physicians, nurses, and allied health technicians, particularly those working in intensive care, emergency medicine, neurology, and internal medicine.

The program, the first-of-its-kind in the UAE within an integrated academic health system, aligns with the Dubai Health Authority’s mandate to train 70% of intensive care and relevant teams in essential organ donation skills.

Inspiring stories

Two families with inspiring experiences in organ donation shared their stories with the participants. Emirati father, Hamdan Al Mulla, spoke about donating his kidney to save the life of his nine-year-old son, Rashid. The surgery performed at Rashid Hospital in Dubai, has allowed his son to regain his health and improve his quality of life.
 A French resident, Nathalie Groll, also recounted her humanitarian experience, describing her decision to donate the organs of her deceased son, Vego, which helped save the lives of five people.

Ongoing efforts

Dubai Health continues to lead organ donation efforts across the UAE, where it has successfully facilitated more than 280 transplant procedures across its facilities, all made possible by the generous support of more than 90 donor families. The organization remains committed to supporting the goals of the UAE’s National Program for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, Hayat, by providing specialised care programs, advancing scientific research, and assisting patients who are unable to afford treatment costs. These efforts have contributed significantly to promoting a culture of organ donation and raising community awareness surrounding its profound humanitarian impact.

The exhibition, held from 17 to 20 November on the sidelines of the Dubai Future Forum 2025 at Emirates Towers, features 100 student projects tailored to real-world needs.

The first, PainDetect, a 2024 RDI Grant recipient, utilizes artificial intelligence and wearable technology to develop new methods for assessing and quantifying pain in real time, offering insights that could reshape how healthcare professionals understand and manage pain.

The second project, Design4Change: Sustainability in Healthcare, builds upon an international initiative from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) that utilizes cross-cultural collaboration and design thinking to enhance health outcomes and promote environmental sustainability.  Since 2023, this cross-sector alliance has connected more than 350 students from 13 universities across eight countries to co-create innovative solutions.

Dr. Muna Tahlak, Chief Medical Officer at Dubai Health and Vice Provost for Clinical Affairs at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), has concluded her term as President of the International Hospital Federation (IHF) after becoming the first Arab woman to hold the position in 2023, since the Federation’s establishment in 1929.

Her presidency concluded during the 48th World Hospital Congress in Geneva, inaugurated by Dr. Tahlak and attended by His Excellency Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director General of Dubai Health Authority, and His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The event, being held from 10–13 November 2025 at the Geneva International Conference Center, in collaboration with the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), has brought together healthcare leaders and experts from across the globe to exchange insights and explore the future of healthcare.  

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Tahlak guided the Federation through a period of growth, expanding collaboration with global health organisations and furthering its mission to advance healthcare management and quality worldwide.

Highlighting the significance of Dr. Tahlak’s presidency, His Excellency Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali said: “Dr. Muna Tahlak’s leadership of the International Hospital Federation marked a defining milestone for Emirati women, showcasing their active role in shaping the future of the global healthcare sector. Her achievements reflect the continued support of the UAE’s leadership, which empowers national talent to lead with impact on both local and international levels.” 

He added: “During her tenure, Dr. Tahlak built bridges of cooperation with global health organisations, expanding dialogue around healthcare quality. Her accomplishments reinforce the presence of Emirati women in decision-making positions.”

His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif said, “We take great pride in the achievements of Dr. Muna Tahlak during her presidency of the IHF. As the first Emirati and Arab woman to hold this key role, she set an inspiring example of leadership, advancing the UAE’s representation on the world stage.”

In his remarks at the IHF General Assembly, His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif expressed his appreciation for Dr. Tahlak’s exceptional efforts, which strengthened the Federation’s presence internationally and supported the development of its healthcare quality programmes.

Reflecting on her term, Dr. Muna Tahlak said: “It has been an honour to serve as President of the International Hospital Federation, an opportunity made possible by our leadership, whose support empowers Emirati women to excel globally and contribute meaningfully across various sectors, particularly in healthcare.”

She added: “I extend my sincere gratitude to the IHF team for their support throughout my tenure, which was instrumental in advancing the Federation’s global impact.”

Healthcare Expertise 
As part of the congress in Geneva, His Excellency Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali and His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif led an interactive workshop with young healthcare executives, sharing insights on leadership development and career progression in healthcare.

The session, part of the ‘Young Executive Leaders’ programme, brought together 48 participants from 33 countries, creating a dynamic forum for knowledge exchange and discussion on best practices shaping the future of healthcare. 

Dubai Health welcomed world-renowned heart surgeon Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub during his visit to the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), and Al Jalila Foundation, where he toured the research centers and learned about programs and projects within Dubai Health’s integrated academic health system.

He was received by H.E. Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Member of the Dubai Health Board of Directors, Chairperson of Al Jalila Foundation Board of Directors, and Chairperson of the MBRU Council.
Also in attendance were H.E. Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority; H.E. Issam Galadari, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Healthcare City Authority; H.E. Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of MBRU, along with a number of Dubai Health leaders.

Professor Yacoub was accompanied by his daughter, Ms. Lisa Magdi Yacoub; Tawhid Abdullah, Chairman of the Dubai Jewellery Group; and Francis White, CEO of Heart Biotech.

Dubai, UAE, 28 October 2025: Dubai Health organized the fourth edition of the Clinic of Hope initiative at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, aligning with its mission and supporting the Year of Community, which embodies the leadership’s vision for a cohesive and sustainable society. 

The multi-specialty pediatric clinic aims to provide essential, free healthcare services to children in need. This year, more than 500 children of various nationalities benefited from the initiative. 

Since its launch in March 2024, the “Clinic of Hope” initiative has recorded a 92% increase in the number of beneficiaries compared to its first edition, bringing the total number of children supported to 1,542. This reflects the initiative’s success and its positive impact in promoting social responsibility. 

The clinic provided medical care across more than 18 specialties, including general pediatrics, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, asthma and allergy, genetics, ENT, hematology and oncology, physiotherapy, nutrition, mental health, orthopedics, pediatric surgery, audiology, and ophthalmology. 

The event was held in collaboration with the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai, the Emirates Literature Foundation, the Modern Sports Training Academy (MST), and the Emirates Red Crescent. It also featured the participation of several private entities and more than 100 volunteers, including medical, nursing, and administrative teams, as well as students from Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health. 

The event was attended by Dr. Abdulla Al Khayat, CEO Emeritus of Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of Women and Children's Campus at Dubai Health; and Dr. Amer Al Zarooni, Chief Executive Officer of Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health. 

A Promise to Serve 

Dr. Mohammed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of Women and Children’s Campus at Dubai Health, said: “We are proud of the success achieved by the “Clinic of Hope” initiative since its launch last year. The initiative reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to Advancing Health for Humanity by providing essential medical care to children. Dr. Al Awadhi added that Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, will cover the treatment costs of children whose medical conditions require advanced interventions, in line with Dubai Health’s “Patient First” promise. 

He also expressed his gratitude to all participating entities and thanked the volunteers for their efforts and contributions to the success of this initiative.

Brigadier Abdul Samad Hussain Al Baloushi, Assistant Director General for the Sector of Leadership and Future Affairs at the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai, affirmed that the participation of the Directorate in the “Clinic of Hope” initiative reflects its deep commitment to social responsibility and its dedication to contributing to initiatives that support community members and ease their hardships. This participation embodies a human-centered approach that reflects Dubai’s vision of enhancing quality of life and aligns with the UAE’s “Year of Community 2025” in fostering values of cooperation and solidarity among all members of society.

Reading: A path to wellness  

Ahlam Bolooki, CEO Emirates Literature Foundation, Director of Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, and Managing Director ELF Publishing said: "As a mother to two young girls, I’m reminded every day of the comfort and wonder that stories bring — not only to children but to people of all ages. Our participation in the Clinic of Hope was a beautiful example of how reading can nurture wellbeing, offering a moment of calm and connection even in the most unexpected places”. 

Diverse activities 

The initiative also featured a series of activities that combined learning and play, where children participated in reading sessions, creative arts and crafts, and interactive performances. The program included awareness activities on oral hygiene and healthy nutrition, along with fitness exercises designed to encourage children to adopt a healthy and balanced lifestyle. 

The Emirates Red Crescent distributed gifts to the children, who also enjoyed meeting the popular mascots of the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, “Salem” and “Salama”, in a cheerful and engaging experience. The Emirates Literature Foundation took part in the clinic with its UAE Reading Caravan, bringing the joy of reading to patients and families. Volunteers from the Foundation and its Voices of Future Generations initiative read stories aloud, creating moments of comfort and connection that highlighted the healing power of literature, while the Modern Sports Training Academy (MST) offered a variety of fun sports activities. 

Dubai Health announced that over 145 successful robotic surgeries have been performed at Dubai Hospital since the launch of its robotic surgery programme in the second half of 2022. This achievement reflects its commitment to adopting innovative medical technologies to serve patients and continuously improve healthcare quality.

His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer - Dubai Health, said: “This marks a milestone in the digital transformation of our healthcare system and reflects our commitment to leveraging advanced medical technologies and solutions that elevate the quality of care, in line with our vision to Advance Health for Humanity.”

His Excellency highlighted that Dubai Health is continuously strengthening its digital infrastructure across all hospitals and health centres within its integrated academic health system. Guided by its ‘Patient First’ promise, Dubai Health equips medical teams with innovative technologies that improve accuracy and safety, contributing to a more seamless patient journey. Dr. Yaser AlSaeedi, Head of Urology and Director of the Robotic Surgery programme at Dubai Health, and Assistant Professor at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, said: “Robotic surgeries at Dubai Health represent a significant step forward in the use of smart technologies in the operating room. This approach has increased surgical precision, strengthened patient safety, and led to improved outcomes.”

Dr. AlSaeedi affirmed that robotic surgeries have proven highly effective, reducing blood loss by over 90%, shortening recovery times, and significantly lowering complications and pain. This approach offers a safer and more precise treatment option, improving the patient’s experience and enabling a faster return to normal life.

Dr. AlSaeedi added that all specialised surgeries performed over the past three years have demonstrated strong clinical outcomes, including a reduction in hospital stays from two weeks to less than three days. He emphasised that training medical staff in robotic surgical systems remains essential to ensuring procedures are performed safely and effectively. The training combines both theory and hands-on practice and equips practitioners with the necessary skills to become licensed in this advanced technology, supporting its safe and regulated use.

Robotic surgical systems at Dubai Health
Robotic surgeries at Dubai Health span multiple specialties, including urology, general surgery, and gynaecology. These procedures utilise robotic systems that provide surgeons with high-precision, 3D visualisation. The surgeon operates a control unit with a magnified viewing screen, guiding the robotic arms inside the body with precise, real-time movements. This minimally invasive approach uses small incisions instead of a single large one, helping surgeons perform complex procedures with greater accuracy and control. It also reduces the need to move surrounding tissue, muscles, and organs, lowering the risk of infection and pain during recovery, and ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Dubai Health has announced its participation in GITEX Global 2025, where it will showcase its latest digital initiatives, highlighting its role in enhancing healthcare outcomes and improving the patient experience.

Dubai Health will participate within the Dubai Government Pavilion at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 13 to 17 October. The exhibition, which brings together leading public and private entities, focuses this year on the latest developments in biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

Atif Al Braiki, Chief Digital and AI Officer at Dubai Health, said: "Dubai Health’s participation in GITEX Global 2025 reflects our commitment to leveraging modern technologies and artificial intelligence solutions to advance healthcare services and redefine the patient journey. Digital Projects

During the exhibition, Dubai Health will showcase three digital projects as part of its efforts to harness AI to improve the quality of healthcare services.

Among them is Virufy, an AI-powered smartphone application designed for rapid and accessible prescreening of infectious respiratory diseases through the analysis of users’ cough sounds. The initiative stems from a partnership with Dubai Future Solutions – Prototypes for Humanity. Under this collaboration, a clinical research study will be conducted to validate the accuracy of Virufy’s AI algorithm. Once validated, this technology has the potential to strengthen public health preparedness, offering a convenient screening tool directly accessible via smartphones.

Another initiative is “Virtual ICU”, a digital system focused on improving pediatric care and ensuring continuous monitoring in a secure, technology-driven environment. It enables specialists to remotely monitor critical cases through smart surveillance tools and real-time clinical data analysis, ensuring early intervention, reducing complications, and supporting recovery. The system also connects intensive care units through a unified virtual network, allowing medical teams to share knowledge and provide consultations across facilities.

Also highlighted is “Agentic AI for MBRU Admissions,” a generative AI-powered virtual assistant designed to provide round-the-clock support for students and applicants. It responds to inquiries about admission programs, registration requirements, and scholarships at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health.

The intelligent system interacts through phone calls and text-based chats, delivering accurate and reliable information that simplifies the admissions process and creates a smoother experience.

Dubai Health’s participation in GITEX Global 2025 aligns with both the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and the Dubai Digital Strategy, reflecting its commitment to deploying AI across its system to serve the community  and improve quality of life.

Dubai Health will showcase career opportunities, training programs, and academic pathways for Emirati talents at Ru’ya Careers UAE 2025, held from September 23 to 25 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Across three days, Dubai Health will highlight employment opportunities and host expert-led discussions showcasing training and academic programs for graduates and professionals.

Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, said: “Our participation at Ru’ya Careers UAE 2025 underscores our commitment to cultivating national talents in healthcare, scientific, and academic fields. Dubai Health, has introduced amyloid PET scans, making the service available in the UAE. The advanced imaging technique allows physicians to detect Alzheimer’s at its earliest stages, giving patients more accurate diagnoses of cognitive decline and opening access to timely, targeted treatments.

Available at Dubai Molecular Imaging Center, the service enables physicians to detect amyloid plaque buildup in the brain, an early marker of Alzheimer’s disease, years before symptoms appear. It improves diagnostic accuracy by distinguishing Alzheimer’s from conditions such as vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia, ensuring patients receive treatment plans that are better tailored to their needs.

The amyloid PET scans, which began in Dubai Hospital in April also includes the UAE’s first amyloid-targeted therapy program. By combining diagnosis and treatment, it positions the country at the forefront of neurological care in the region.

Commenting on the launch, Dr. Usama Mohammad AlBastaki, Chair of Medical Imaging at Dubai Health, said: “Introducing amyloid PET scans is a valuable addition to Dubai Health’s system of care. It reflects our commitment to adopting advanced diagnostic solutions that improve outcomes and allow physicians to intervene earlier in complex neurological cases.”

He added: “The technology makes it possible to identify dementia subtypes with precision, a significant step forward in daily clinical practice. It also provides the scientific basis for new targeted therapies that can modify the course of disease rather than simply treat symptoms, in line with Dubai Health’s Patient First promise.”

For her part, Dr. Batool Albalooshi Head & consultant Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging- Radionuclide and molecular therapy, Dubai Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging Center, Dubai Hospital, said the adoption of amyloid PET imaging in the UAE marks a major advance in neurological diagnostics, giving patients accurate and reliable information about their condition while opening access to the latest medical advancements that target amyloid protein and help slow memory decline in the early stages.

She added: “Besides adopting innovative solutions, Dubai Molecular Imaging Center is committed to leading discoveries and developing new diagnostics and therapies, to advance precision medicine in ways that improve patient outcomes, strengthen clinical decision-making, and support the broader healthcare system in addressing complex neurological conditions.”

The advance scan is recommended for people over 40 with chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, those experiencing mild cognitive impairment, or patients with inconclusive dementia diagnoses. It also supports individuals eligible for disease-modifying therapies and families seeking precise diagnosis to guide future care planning.

Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, welcomed its tenth cohort into the Doctor of Medicine program with a White Coat Ceremony. This event is a deeply symbolic tradition for medical students during which they take the Hippocratic Oath, marking the beginning of their academic and professional journey and reinforcing the values of commitment and professional ethics throughout their studies.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of MBRU; Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Acting Chief Academic Officer at Dubai Health and Acting Provost at MBRU; Professor Suleiman Al-Hammadi, Dean of the College of Medicine at MBRU; and Dr. Laila Al Suwaidi, Dean of Student Affairs at MBRU, along with MBRU faculty members, students, and their parents.

Dr. Amer Sharif congratulated the students on reaching this important milestone in their academic journey, emphasizing that MBRU leads the learning and discovery missions of Dubai’s first integrated academic health system, Dubai Health. He also introduced a new tradition, the Patient First Pinning Ceremony. As the primary value of Dubai Health, wearing the Patient First pin on the white coats underscores the students’ commitment to placing patients at the center of their medical practice, and serves as a reminder of the university’s core values: Respect, Excellence, Teamwork, Integrity, and Empathy.

Since its launch in 2016, the Doctor of Medicine program at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences has graduated 170 doctors, many of whom have joined residency and fellowship programs both within the UAE and abroad. The six-year program combines medical education with clinical training and scientific research.

Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi said: “The White Coat Ceremony, now in its tenth edition, represents an important milestone in the journey of our new students and reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to developing medical professionals who contribute to serving the community and enhancing the quality of healthcare in Dubai and across the UAE.”

She added: “Through our integrated academic health system, we ensure a connection between education, clinical practice, and scientific research, providing our students with the knowledge and experience that strengthen their skills and elevate their capabilities. Over the past ten years, we take pride in supporting the healthcare sector with highly qualified medical professionals across various specialities, contributing to the advancement of the health system.”
Dean Suleiman Al-Hammadi said: “The tenth cohort of the Doctor of Medicine program represents a continuation of the journey that began in 2016, followed by our graduates’ progression into residency and specialty programs. This new cohort continues this advanced academic path, contributing to the preparation of physicians qualified to enhance the quality of medical services.”

At World Health Expo (WHX) Tech 2025, Dubai Health announced a series of new and strengthened collaborations with leading institutions across academic, technology, and government. These partnerships underscore the integrated academic health systems’ commitment to driving innovation in healthcare delivery, research and education.

Siemens Healthineers

Through an MOU, Dubai Health and Siemens Healthineers will establish a strategic innovation partnership. The agreement provides a basis for collaboration on defining innovation programs, including the Design4Change Innovation Week program set for February 2026. A separate workstream will focus on co-designing a sustainability in healthcare program for the Dubai Health Leadership Academy.

Ayman Al Hussein, Country Head, Siemens Healthineers UAE, said: “We are pleased to join forces with Dubai Health to foster innovation and build capabilities that will shape the future of healthcare in the region. Dubai Future Foundation (DFF)

The Healthcare Sandbox, a new pilot initiative under Sandbox Dubai, was launched through a collaboration between Dubai Future Foundation, Dubai Chambers, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Digital Authority, and Dubai Health. The initiative will provide a platform for the development and testing of a wide range of technologies and use cases across healthcare. This collaboration builds on Dubai Health’s broader partnership with DFF, whose ‘Research, Development, and Innovation Program’ supports high-impact research projects in the city. Prototypes for Humanity

Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which leads the learning and discovery arms of Dubai Health, entered an MOU with Dubai Future Solutions - Prototypes for Humanity to advance the research and development of health science startups, with their solutions to be tested and validated across Dubai Health’s healthcare facilities. One such initiative is with Virufy, an AI-powered mobile application designed for the rapid and cost-effective prescreening of infectious respiratory diseases. The collaboration unites Dubai Health and Nafasy.AI, a Dubai venture set up by Prototypes for Humanity to advance the technology developed by the teams at Virufy and the University of Washington, to build scalable tools for public health protection.

Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI)

Building on their collaboration since 2019, Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) and MBRU will continue their productive partnership on innovation and design thinking to develop healthcare solutions. The partnership will include faculty and student exchanges, joint research and projects, such as the Design4Health Bootcamp.

Schneider Electric & Microsoft

Dubai Health also signed agreements to collaborate with Schneider Electric and Microsoft to drive innovation in healthcare facilities, focusing on 'Intelligent Hospital' initiatives that enhance operational efficiency.

Huawei

In addition to new agreements, Dubai Health continues to be Huawei’s partner of choice for the testing and validation of its latest healthcare technologies. Building on earlier work with smartwatch health features, the partnership brings together expertise in healthcare and technology to advance innovative digital health solutions.

Dubai Health has received the Epic Gold Stars Level 10 designation for its Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system ranking it among the top 3% of healthcare institutions worldwide using the Epic system to receive this recognition. Epic’s Gold Stars Program is a global, 10-level system that evaluates healthcare institutions’ readiness in adopting and utilizing Epic’s EMR system. Level 10, the program’s highest distinction, is awarded to institutions that use more than 95% of the system’s Gold Star features.

A global benchmark in digital healthcare

The announcement was made during the Epic User Group Meeting 2025 in Wisconsin, USA, where healthcare leaders from Epic customers around the world convened to review advances in medical technology.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in Dubai Health’s ongoing efforts to deliver smart, seamless, and convenient healthcare services to patients, aligned with international best practices and standards.

Electronic Integration

Launched in 2017, the Epic system connects patient records across all Dubai Health hospitals and centers. Clinicians can access patients’ information and medical records in real time, reducing delays in diagnosis and supporting better treatment decisions.

The inauguration was held as part of the Dubai Health Board of Directors meeting, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and attended by Board members including Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, His Excellency Abdulla Abdul Rahman Al Shaibani, Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, His Excellency Walid Saeed Al Awadhi, His Excellency Mohammed Hassan Al Shehhi, and Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed conveyed his sincere appreciation to His Excellency Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, for his valuable contributions to Dubai Health and for his instrumental role in laying the foundation for Dubai’s first academic health system. His Highness wished him continued success in his new responsibilities.

During the meeting, Board members reviewed key achievements and were briefed on the progress of projects aimed at enhancing patient care and elevating the quality of healthcare.

His Highness honoured Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Chairperson of the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Charity Foundation, and Dr. Amina Al Rostamani, Board member at the AW Rostamani Group, in recognition of their support in establishing Dubai Health’s Center for Innovation and Technology. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed toured the Center for Innovation and Technology in the company of Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg and Her Excellency Dr. Amina Al Rostamani, the center’s primary benefactors, as well as members of the Dubai Health Board of Directors. Strategic partnerships
The Center for Innovation and Technology was established through the generous contributions of the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Charity Foundation and the AW Rostamani Group, which made a joint donation of AED10 million through Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health. 

The center’s launch coincides with the first edition of WHX Tech 2025, the Global Health Technology Exhibition, taking place from 8–10 September 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. During the event, Dubai Health will announce a series of new collaborations with leading academic, technology, and government partners to advance projects at the center. These partnerships include Dubai Future Foundation, Prototypes for Humanity, Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation, Siemens Healthineers, Schneider Electric, and Huawei. 

The Center for Innovation and Technology is committed to transforming bold ideas into real-world solutions that enhance patient care, drive medical advancements, and improve lives, in line with Dubai Health’s ‘Patient First’ promise. It also serves as an educational and research platform, enabling clinicians, scientists, learners, and innovators to pioneer breakthroughs that shape the future of healthcare.

Designed in line with the world’s leading health innovation hubs, the center houses advanced laboratories and technologies for developing, testing and validating solutions. This includes the Extended Reality and Brain Interface Lab (XR BCI), the Robotics and Sensors Lab, Artificial Intelligence and Data Lab, Design Lab, a User Experience Room, and spaces for collaboration.

To support the transition from discovery to application, the center also offers comprehensive services through its Technology Transfer Office (TTO), enabling innovators to protect intellectual property and build partnerships.

Dubai Health has announced its participation in the World Health Expo Tech (WHX Tech 2025), taking place in Dubai from September 8 to 10 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The event serves as a global platform to showcase the latest innovations and smart technologies in digital healthcare.

Organized by Informa Markets and held under the patronage of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, Dubai Health, Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services, and the Nabidh Platform, the event is also presented in partnership with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and in collaboration with KLAS Research, a company specializing in healthcare information technology.

Commenting on the event, Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, said: “The launch of WHX Tech 2025 in Dubai reinforces the city’s role in the global healthcare landscape. By taking part in the inaugural edition, Dubai Health reaffirms its commitment to supporting international efforts to accelerate the adoption of innovation across the sector.”

Alongside the new projects, Dubai Health will also present ongoing initiatives across its system, including the OBIX Data Systems, Dubai Health’s AI Literacy Program (ALiF), the Patient Journey Mapping Project, and smartwatch testing for blood pressure measurement, all of which have played a key role in enhancing patient experiences and care delivery.

The event will bring together more than 5,000 healthcare leaders and decision-makers, 200 speakers, and 300 brands from 30 countries to highlight AI advancements across the healthcare sector, interoperability, digital transformation and investment in health technology.

Dubai Civil Defense visited Dubai Health to learn about its leading role as the city’s first fully integrated academic health system. The visit aimed to explore opportunities for closer collaboration, enhance service quality, and strengthen strategic partnerships.

During the visit, key future plans and initiatives of Dubai Health were showcased, aimed at advancing health for humanity, and strengthening Dubai’s position as a leading global destination for healthcare services.

The delegation, led by His Excellency Lieutenant General Expert Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Civil Defense, included Major General Jamal bin Aded Al Muhairi, Deputy Commander-in-Chief, and Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Essa Ahmad Al Mutawa, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Smart Services. Students from Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, have once again made an impact on the global stage at the ‘Design for Change’ international bootcamp, organized by Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The 2025 edition convened more than 100 participants from six countries, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and the UAE, under the theme ‘Sustainability in Healthcare.’ Medical, nursing, design, and engineering students were immersed in this interdisciplinary and intercultural environment to develop innovative solutions that advance sustainability in the healthcare sector.

This year, MBRU’s Year 5 Doctor of Medicine (MD) student Sara Vidha and her team received the Best Problem-Solving Award for their solution to enhance energy efficiency in radiology departments. Krish Bhatia, a Year 2 MD student, and his team were nominated for the Best Team Strategy. This builds on MBRU’s success from last year’s bootcamp, where student projects received international recognition from Prototype4Humanity, and another earned Gold at the 2024 UNESCO Future Designer International Innovation Design Awards.

More than 100 students from nine universities across Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and the UAE, were challenged to address critical issues in sustainability and healthcare. The students showcased their creativity and problem-solving skills by developing and pitching their own projects. They also had the opportunity to visit various healthcare facilities, learn from experts, and actively collaborate with peers.

Maryam Alabdullah, a medical student at MBRU said, "The Design for Change bootcamp opened my eyes to the possibilities of innovation and collaboration in healthcare. I learned a lot from the different speakers, mentors, and peers who shared their insights and experiences with us. One of the highlights was visiting Taylor's University in Malaysia, where we learned how they use virtual reality.”

Scientists at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, have published the first Arab Pangenome Reference, marking a major milestone in both regional and global genomic research.  The study, released in Nature Communications, a leading scientific journal, provides a crucial foundation for advancing precision medicine and personalised healthcare for Arab populations, while also supporting the UAE’s National Genome Strategy, a 10-year initiative launched in 2023 by the Emirates Genome Council to advance personalised, preventive, and precision healthcare through cutting-edge genomic science.

The reference was built using high-quality DNA sequencing from 53 people of diverse Arab backgrounds in the UAE. The work, conducted in MBRU’s state-of-the-art Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG), uncovered over 110 million base pairs of novel DNA sequences and identified nearly nine million small differences and more than 235,000 larger structural differences specific to Arab populations that have not been reported before. These findings are significant, as global DNA references have historically underrepresented Arab populations — a gap this research helps to close.

The Arab Pangenome Reference supports national and regional precision medicine initiatives by enabling the development of population-specific biomarkers, risk models, and therapeutic targets. One notable discovery was the duplicated gene TAF11L5, found highly enriched in Arab individuals studied but absent from global references. This gene may play a role in regulating other genes and could have implications for understanding disease risk and individual variation in treatment response.

Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director General, Dubai Health Authority, and co-author of the study, said: “This achievement strengthens the UAE’s position in genomic science. By building a reference that reflects the genetic diversity of Arab populations, we are enabling more precise and equitable healthcare. It’s a foundational step towards realising the goals of our National Genome Strategy and ensuring that future medical innovations are shaped by data from our own communities.”

Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Acting Provost of MBRU, and co-author of the study said: “The capabilities of the CATG lab were central to the success of this project. From genetic sequencing to advanced bioinformatics, every stage of the research was completed in-house. This level of integration gave us full control over quality and timelines, reflecting Dubai Health’s commitment to building world-class infrastructure and fostering national scientific leaders."

While genomic research has advanced rapidly over the past two decades, much of the foundational data has come from a narrow subset of global populations. This has created blind spots in how genetic risk is understood and addressed across different communities. The Arab Pangenome Reference contributes to a growing international effort to correct this imbalance by introducing high-quality data from a historically underrepresented population.

Dr. Mohammed Uddin, Director of CATG and Associate Professor of Genetics at MBRU, and senior author of the study, said: “This pangenome reference marks a major advancement in our understanding of Arab genomic diversity. It serves as a critical resource for both research discovery and clinical genome diagnostics, with lasting impact for future generations across the region.”

The project also developed ‘PanScan’, a bioinformatics tool to support more complex analysis of human pangenomes. Although not the central focus of the study, PanScan enables researchers to detect gene duplications, novel DNA changes, and complex DNA structures. Now publicly available on GitHub, a common resource used by scientists worldwide, the tool was created to support the Arab Pangenome Reference and similar efforts globally.

Dr. Nasna Nassir, lead author of the study and Assistant Professor at MBRU, said: “To support the Arab Pangenome Reference study, we developed PanScan, a tool designed to identify novel variants, gene duplications, and complex haplotype patterns specific to Arab populations. PanScan was key to uncovering unique genomic insights in our study and is now publicly available to support similar research globally.”

Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, part of Dubai Health, and the only children’s hospital in the UAE, has completed over 100 treatments for patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), with the first administered to a five-month-old patient in 2020. The latest recipient, Syrian child Yaqeen Ibrahim Kanaker received treatment supported by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.

The treatment involved a one-time intravenous infusion of Zolgensma. Administered at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital’s specialized infusion unit, the therapy was completed within an hour. Post-treatment, the patient will undergo a short observation period followed by regular outpatient visits over the next few months to monitor progress and ensure optimal outcomes.

Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of the Dubai Health Women and Children’s Campus, said: “Reaching more than 100 treated cases of SMA reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to making world-class care accessible to all children. Yaqeen’s case highlights the strength of our multidisciplinary model and our commitment to ensuring that children with complex conditions like SMA receive the highest standard of care under one roof.”

Dr. Haitham Elbashir, Consultant Pediatric Neurorehabilitation at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, said: “Zolgensma is a transformative therapy that offers children with SMA the chance to regain strength and function early in life. In Yaqeen’s case, the treatment is being delivered through a carefully coordinated, multi-specialty care plan. Our team will continue to monitor her closely in the weeks and months ahead to ensure the best possible outcome. Every case is unique, and our approach is always tailored to each child’s specific needs.”

The completion of over 100 SMA treatments at Al Jalila Children’s reflects the strength of Dubai Health’s specialized pediatric services and its commitment to delivering high-quality care for children with complex medical needs.

Dubai Health and GE HealthCare, a leading global medical technology and digital solutions innovator, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on enhancing Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) practices and co-developing innovative AI solutions to support clinical decision-making, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes across the UAE and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The collaboration combines Dubai Health’s academic and innovation expertise with GE HealthCare’s advanced technological capabilities to enhance medical education, strengthen clinical decision-making, and improve health outcomes throughout the UAE and the broader MENA region.

The MoU will establish Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) as a POCUS Education Center of Excellence and a pioneer in Point-of-Care Ultrasound education across the MENA region.

Key initiatives include: a ‘Train-of-Trainer (TOT)’ structured program to build capacity in certified facilitators and trainers. The Facilitator Training Program will also enhance the scalability and effectiveness of POCUS program delivery and execution across a broader geographical region, enabling wider participation of attendees, students, and delegates.

In addition, the collaboration will extend to the co-development of AI solutions through Dubai Health Innovations, which supports transformative solutions that enhance patient care, drive medical advancements, and improve health outcomes. This partnership will focus on the development and validation of emerging AI technologies in areas of mutual interest, such as radiology and computer vision, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy, streamline clinical workflows, and facilitate early detection of medical conditions. Through this joint effort, both parties seek to foster innovation, accelerate adoption of cutting-edge AI tools, and contribute to the advancement of healthcare delivery in the region.

The MoU between the two parties will be in effect for two years and is renewable by mutual agreement.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, today met with the top-performing graduates of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) at the Union House in Dubai.

His Highness congratulated the graduates on their academic achievements, praising the dedication and scientific distinction they demonstrated—values that reflect the founding principles of the University and the UAE’s ongoing pursuit of excellence in education and healthcare.

During the meeting, His Highness highlighted the importance of nurturing talent capable of shaping the future of medicine and scientific research in the region. He said the graduates represent key pillars in the UAE’s ambition to build a world-class academic and healthcare ecosystem that attracts leading minds from around the globe.

His Highness said: “We take pride in these achievements, which form part of the broader success story the nation is building. This academic excellence stands as a testament to the UAE’s ability to shape the future by nurturing exceptional minds across vital sectors.”

Sheikh Mohammed added: “The Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences has become a beacon of modern knowledge and an incubator for innovation in the healthcare sector. It plays a vital role in preparing future leaders in medicine and scientific research—fully aligned with our vision to position the UAE as a global centre for knowledge and advanced healthcare.”

The meeting was attended by Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Member of the Dubai Health Board of Directors and Chairperson of MBRU Council; His Excellency Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority; His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of MBRU; Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Acting Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU; and members of the MBRU Council.

The 2025 graduating class comprises 164 students from 30 nationalities, across 30 academic programmes. Among them are 129 female graduates, including 52 Emiratis.

Dubai Health’s Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital, the first integrated, comprehensive cancer hospital in Dubai, was awarded Gold in the Future Healthcare Projects category by World Architecture News in March 2025.

The World Architecture News Awards are designed to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding architecture on an international scale and are judged by a panel of international experts. The 2024 Future Projects: Healthcare category specifically honors projects that are innovative, visionary, and imaginative prior to construction completion.

David Martin, Project Architect and Global Design Director for Stantec, the architectural firm behind the hospital’s design, said, “We are honored to see our design of the new hospital win this prestigious award. The project challenged us to create a space that not only meets the functional requirements of a modern healthcare facility but also fosters a healing environment for patients and the care team alike. This recognition is a testament to Dubai Health’s vision and dedication to transforming cancer care. They are a wonderful partner, providing insightful feedback and support throughout the design journey.”

The hospital’s patient-centered approach is reflected in its architectural concept, which draws inspiration from the UAE’s national tree, the Ghaf, a symbol of resilience and life. Feedback from cancer patients, informed the design that blends clinical functionality with emotional well-being. Central to the facility, an open-air courtyard with greenery that brings in natural light, creating a calming environment.

Located in Dubai Healthcare City Phase 2, the 59,000 square meter hospital is set to host 53 clinics, 21 clinical research areas, 60 infusion rooms, 10 urgent care rooms, 5 radiotherapy rooms, and 116 inpatient beds. Designed with well-being and environmental sustainability in mind, it will also feature 19 tranquil gardens for patients, their families, and the hospital community. Once completed, the hospital will serve as a center of excellence for cancer treatment and research, and will offer a comprehensive range of services, from early diagnosis to treatment and supportive care, all delivered by multidisciplinary teams. Research and clinical trials will be central to its mission, driving the discovery of evidence-based treatments and personalized therapies aimed at improving patient outcomes.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Health and Chancellor of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), attended the graduation ceremony of MBRU’s Class of 2025, the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The ceremony honoured 164 graduates representing 30 academic programmes across the Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine, Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery, the College of Medicine, and the Deanship of Graduate Medical Education.

The university also marked a key milestone with the graduation of the first cohort from Dubai’s only Biomedical Sciences PhD programme, along with six graduates from the new Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education.

Enhancing healthcare capabilities

His Highness congratulated the graduates and their families, emphasising that the university continues to play a vital role in strengthening the healthcare sector by developing highly skilled professionals dedicated to driving positive and sustainable change in the community. He praised the graduates’ contributions to advancing the healthcare system and expanding its meaningful impact.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said: "Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, the emirate continues to establish itself as a global hub for excellence in medical education and research. Today, we take pride in the graduation of a new cohort of talented healthcare professionals who will support Dubai’s efforts to deliver an advanced model for healthcare."

His Highness, Chairman of Dubai Health and Chancellor of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), urged the graduates to practice their noble profession with commitment and responsibility, stressing the importance of continuous learning, growth, and readiness to adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape in order to have a tangible impact on the lives of individuals and communities they serve.

Pride and honour

Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Member of the Dubai Health Board of Directors and Chairperson of MBRU Council, stated: "The graduation of a new class of talented students marks a moment of immense pride and is a testament to the University’s commitment to empowering young talents and nurturing tomorrow’s leaders in healthcare."

She added: "Since its establishment nine years ago, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, MBRU has progressed steadily in fostering a culture that champions excellence and innovation, preparing future generations to deliver innovative solutions that enhance quality of life, supporting the vision of the UAE and Dubai for a sustainable healthcare future."

His Excellency Professor Alawi Al-Sheikh Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and guest of honour, addressed the attendees during the ceremony, saying: "Our leadership’s commitment to human development and knowledge is not a recent endeavor, it is a deeply rooted legacy that has shaped the very identity of our nation. The late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, captured this vision when he said that building people must come before building factories, and that human development must precede infrastructure.

This wisdom dates back nearly a century, when the late Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum sent the first student from Dubai to study medicine abroad, fully aware that investing in minds is the most valuable investment of all. This vision was carried forward through institutional progress, including a pivotal moment in October 1970, when the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum ordered the establishment of the Department of Health and Medical Services, with a strong focus on education and professional training."

In his address, Professor Dr. Alawi shared a series of inspiring messages with the graduates, reminding them that compassion lies at the heart of healthcare. He called on them to lead with humility, describing it as one of life’s greatest teachers, and to remain open to continuous learning and discovery. He encouraged them to uphold integrity, to trust in the moral compass rooted in their values, and reminded them that a person’s true worth is measured by their generosity and kindness to others.

His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health and President of MBRU, said: "We celebrate the graduation of a new cohort of physicians and healthcare professionals, nurtured within our integrated academic health system. These graduates embody Dubai Health’s vision to develop globally competent medical professionals, individuals who combine academic excellence, clinical expertise, and a deep commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care, in line with our ‘Patient First’ promise.

We are also proud to mark a significant milestone with the graduation of our first PhD students, whose research has enriched the scientific landscape and contributed to advancing discovery within our health system. We are deeply proud of this cohort and confident in their ability to make a meaningful impact on healthcare. We wish them continued success as they carry forward our shared mission to advance health for humanity."

On behalf of the graduating Class of 2025, Dr. Sarah Tahlak addressed the audience during the ceremony, saying: “This day marks a pivotal milestone as we transition into the next chapter, as qualified physicians and healthcare professionals carrying forward a profound humanitarian mission.

Our years at MBRU have been filled with growth and learning. We now embrace the responsibility of serving our community with integrity, advancing purposeful scientific research, and contributing to collective progress. On behalf of my fellow graduates, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to our leaders, faculty, and families, who have inspired and guided us throughout this journey. We are committed to living up to the trust you’ve placed in us and to carrying our responsibility with dedication."

Since its founding in 2016, MBRU has contributed more than 1,800 scholarly studies, with 84% published in leading Q1 and Q2 indexed journals. The University has also earned a Group 1 ranking within the Ministry of Education’s National Higher Education Institutions Classification Framework.

It has also established five advanced research centres that drive healthcare innovation and scientific discovery: Center for Protein Engineering, Center for Innovation and Technology, Center for Microbial Sciences, Center for Applied and Translational Genomics, and Center for Space and Aviation Health.
