DAHC, AXDEV Global, Pfizer Global Medical Grants partner for chronically ill patients' enhanced care
The Dubai Academic Health Corporation (DAHC), AXDEV Global, and Pfizer Global announced a public-private partnership to enhance care for patients diagnosed with chronic illnesses, supported by an independent grant from Pfizer Global Medical Grants.
The goal of the collaboration is to establish an evidence-based model in performance and quality improvement to support the adoption of best practices and boost capacity development for patient care with chronic illnesses at the individual, team, practice, and health systems levels.
Dubai will serve as a test-bed to plan and implement the model, identified as the ideal city for the research given its diverse cultural population and unwavering support of its academic health system from the Dubai Academic Health Corporation.
The findings will then be scaled to enhance chronic illness care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and North Africa.
The Dubai Academic Health Corporation will host the initiative at its medical university, Mohammed bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), and AXDEV will provide expert implementation research and project management across every step of the program.
All activities are supported by Pfizer’s independent grant including the research, development, and execution of medical education activities, toolkits and implementation science across multiple health centers in Dubai.
Through a research project out of MBRU, the research will take diabetes as a case example to apply and measure the impact of the interventions in four local health centers in Dubai. Today, diabetes is a chronic illness that affects almost one in every five adults in the UAE and is one of the leading causes of kidney failure globally.
The evidence and results gathered in Dubai will then be scaled to LMICs to reorganize chronic illness care and provide critical tools and education for clinicians, allied health professionals, staff and healthcare administrators.
Commenting on the importance of public-private partnerships, Dr. Hanan Alsuwaidi, Chief Business Officer of the Dubai Academic Health Corporation, said, “The healthcare industry has experienced significant changes since the pandemic. World-class healthcare systems are now turning to proficient partnerships to reimagine business models and access new capabilities. Public-private partnerships, like this one between the Dubai Academic Health Corporation, AXDEV and Pfizer, leverage the strength of all its members to accelerate the adoption of best practices in patient care.”
Suzanne Murray, Founder and CEO of AXDEV Group, stated, “This public-private collaboration, that will bring cutting edge education solutions for healthcare professionals and their teams to directly impact clinical practice, is a testimony that three major organizations, as well as the health centers involved, are committed to improving patient health outcomes with evidencebased and quality education and implementation research.”
Yasser El Dershaby, Vice President, MERA Regional Cluster Medical Lead, Pfizer, also commented on the importance of health equity. “Accessible healthcare for patients living with chronic illnesses is critical given that they are tethered to the healthcare system. Especially in LMICs, it has always been Pfizer’s goal to enhance health equity in underserved communities. Our new public-private partnership with The Dubai Academic Health Corporation and AXDEV Global brings us one step closer to bridging these gaps, and I look forward to the results from our initial research in Dubai.”

Dubai Health Explores Virtual Reality to Reduce Pain and Anxiety in Medical Procedures
Dubai Health, the first integrated academic health system in Dubai, is embracing virtual reality (VR) technology to improve patient care across its hospitals and healthcare centers. This initiative kicks off with a study and implementation program at the Thalassemia Center, exploring the use of VR technology to reduce anxiety and pain during cannulation (needle insertion) procedures for thalassemia patients. This study, the first of its kind for this specific patient group in Dubai, holds promise for a more comfortable and positive healthcare experience.
Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which leads the Learning and Discovery missions of Dubai Health, will conduct and document the study. Unlike prior studies that primarily relied on subjective experiences, this novel approach will incorporate objective measurements such as eye movement tracking and heart rate to assess the effectiveness of VR technology, marking a significant advancement in medical discovery.
Dr. Fatheya Abbas Al Khaja, Director of the Thalassemia Center, expressed her profound optimism for the initiative, stating, “The application of VR technology at the Thalassemia Center has the potential to transform the experience for patients undergoing cannulation procedures. Throughout my years at the Thalassemia Center, we have explored numerous modalities to alleviate the pain of our patients. This program epitomizes our Patient First promise to provide a more comfortable and anxiety-free experience, not just for the patients, but also for their families who witness this process. We are eagerly anticipating the results of this study.”
Separate from the MBRU study, the selected VR technology had been tested extensively. It demonstrated clinically effective results in 14 published and 30 ongoing studies, providing a solid foundation for its use in improving patient experiences.
This program marks the first phase of integrating VR technology across Dubai Health hospitals and healthcare centers, with plans to extend its application into medical procedures at Al Jalila Children's Hospital and Latifa Hospital. Beyond immediate application at the Thalassemia Center, the program also focuses on developing novel VR environments and experiences tailored to the local needs of patients in Dubai. The long-term vision is to develop future iterations of AI-powered VR technology to further personalize the patient experience, a collaborative effort engaging both MBRU students and our clinical staff.
“This program is the first of many to showcase how digital solutions can improve patient care within Dubai Health,” remarked Dr. Yacine Hadijat, Associate Professor of Innovation in Health Science and Digital Health at MBRU’s College of Medicine. “One of the inherent advantages of our integrated academic health system is the ability to cultivate a continuous cycle of improvement within our care, learning and discovery missions. By exploring digital innovations, such as VR technology, we are simultaneously training future healthcare professionals to champion patient-centered care and contribute toward the medical discovery of tech-enabled healthcare solutions. This multifaceted approach holds immense promise to transform the patient journey for countless individuals.”
By spearheading such initiatives, Dubai Health remains at the forefront of healthcare innovation, reaffirming its commitment to delivering patient-centered care and advancing the standard of medical excellence in the region.

Dubai Health Dental Hospital Pediatric Dentistry Clinic Earns Certified Autism Center™ Status, A First for Healthcare in Dubai
Dubai Health Dental Hospital Pediatric Dentistry Clinic has achieved the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), becoming the first healthcare facility in Dubai to do so. The CAC designation recognizes facilities and organizations committed to providing inclusive and accessible services to autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals by equipping their patient-facing workforce with specialized autism and sensory awareness training and certification. As part of this achievement, 80% of the clinic's patient-facing staff have completed the training, adding the facility to the growing number of CACs in Dubai. This milestone supports Dubai's mission to become the first Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD) in the Eastern Hemisphere—a city-wide initiative led by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). This designation recognizes communities that have gone above and beyond to ensure autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals feel welcome and supported through certified lodging, recreation, and healthcare facilities. Dr. Anas AlSalami, Program Director of Pediatric Dentistry at Dubai Health Dental Hospital, said, “We are honored that the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic at Dubai Health Dental Hospital is the first healthcare facility in Dubai to achieve the Certified Autism Center™ designation by IBCCES. This milestone upholds our ‘Patient First’ promise and reinforces our dedication to serving every member of our community with empathy and excellence. By equipping our team with specialized knowledge and skills, we aim to ensure every child receives the best possible oral care tailored to their needs. I am truly grateful to the Dubai Health leadership and our dedicated teams for their unwavering support and teamwork, which made this achievement possible.” With autistic individuals being more prone to hospitalization due to co-occurring medical conditions, sensory sensitivities, and challenges in communication, families often struggle to find healthcare facilities equipped to meet their unique needs. Visits to hospitals can be especially stressful due to untrained staff, overstimulating environments, and a lack of accommodations for sensory sensitivities. To address this growing concern, IBCCES provides specialized training and certification programs for healthcare facilities, ensuring medical professionals are prepared to deliver compassionate, inclusive, and effective care tailored to autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. The Dubai Health Dental Hospital Pediatric Dentistry Clinic offers specialized services designed to meet the unique needs of autistic patients, ensuring a comfortable and supportive experience. These clinics feature sensory-friendly environments with calming lighting, soothing music, and designated quiet areas to help minimize sensory overload. Their dental professionals are extensively trained in working with children on the autism spectrum, using gentle techniques and clear, straightforward communication to ease anxiety. Individualized treatment plans are tailored to each child’s needs, incorporating gradual desensitization to dental procedures and extended appointment durations with regular breaks. To enhance comfort and engagement, we employ visual aids, social stories, and effective behavior management strategies. These comprehensive services reflect our commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care while addressing the distinctive needs of autistic patients. “We are proud to recognize Dubai Health Dental Hospital Pediatric Dentistry Clinic as the first healthcare facility to achieve the Certified Autism Center™ designation in the city of Dubai,” says Myron Pincomb, CEO and board chairman of IBCCES. “Their dedication to inclusivity and accessibility aligns perfectly with the city-wide initiative to make Dubai a more welcoming place to visit, work, and live. We couldn’t be more honored to support this mission. We hope this accomplishment inspires more healthcare facilities to follow their lead.” IBCCES has been an industry leader for over 20 years in cognitive disorder training and certification for education, health care, and corporate professionals around the globe. The organization provides evidence-based training and certification programs created in conjunction with clinical experts and the perspectives of autistic individuals, alongside other resources, ongoing support, and renewal requirements to ensure there is continued learning and a lasting impact. IBCCES also created CertifiedAutismCenter.com, as a free online resource for families that lists certified locations and professionals. Each organization listed on the site has met the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) requirements.
Surgeons Remove the World's Largest Adrenal Tumor at Dubai Hospital
Surgeons at Dubai Health have announced a groundbreaking achievement: the successful removal of the world's largest adrenal tumor at Dubai Hospital. Dubai Hospital's multidisciplinary approach to the surgery, which forms part of the emirate's first integrated academic health system, ensured the best possible outcome. The successful surgery also reflects Dubai Health's promise to put the Patient First.
The 69-year-old patient, previously in good health, was referred to the hospital's emergency unit due to a massive abdominal mass discovered during a scan. Struggling with walking and breathing for months prior to surgery, the patient's condition necessitated immediate specialized care.
Specialists from various disciplines across Dubai Health gathered at Dubai Hospital to deduce the best course of action for the patient. The four-hour procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team of experts from urology, oncology, radiology, interventional radiology, vascular surgery, general surgery, and anesthesia. Measuring 27 x 26 cm and weighing 9.4 kilograms, the tumor’s size and weight surpassed all previous records.
Dr. Fariborz Bagheri, Consultant Urologist at Dubai Hospital, who led the operation, highlighted the complexity and risks associated with the procedure. "Due to the tumor's size and its compression on vital structures, surgical intervention posed considerable challenges," stated Dr. Fariborz. "However, without intervention, the patient's survival was at high risk."
Reflecting on the outcome, Dr. Fariborz expressed gratitude for the successful procedure, attributing it to the combined efforts of the medical and surgical teams. He further commented, "We are very thankful that the patient responded well to the surgery and has fully recovered."
Dr. Mariam Al Raeesi, CEO of Dubai Hospital, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the multidisciplinary team in deciding to proceed with the surgery. "After careful consideration and collaboration among our medical and surgical experts, it was agreed to undertake this complex procedure," Dr. Al Raeesi said. "The enormous success of the procedure is a huge testament to our medical staff here at Dubai Hospital, putting in practice our Patient First promise focused on delivering high-quality care for patients."
Dubai Hospital is one of the largest specialized tertiary hospitals in the UAE. As part of Dubai Health, the first integrated academic health system in Dubai, the hospital provides comprehensive services in all healthcare disciplines, relevant to the needs of the community.
