Anatomic Pathology

Anatomical pathology (histopathology) is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing disease through the examination of organs, tissues, and cells, at a macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular level. Pathologists analyze stained tissue samples under a microscope to identify abnormalities, making histopathological examination an essential tool in the accurate diagnosis of cancer and other diseases.

What Anatomic Pathology Testing Services Are Available?

Gross examination

Diseased tissues are first examined visually, allowing pathologists to identify abnormalities and select the areas to be processed for histopathological analysis.

Histopathology

At the core of anatomical pathology is the microscopic examination of stained tissue sections, using histological techniques to analyze morphology and deliver precise diagnoses.

Histochemistry

Histochemistry is a key technique used to visualize biological structures by identifying the chemical composition and distribution of tissue components. This is achieved through specialized stains, unique cellular chemical environments, heterologous expression techniques, and enzymatic activity analysis.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a specialized histopathology technique that identifies specific proteins and markers within cells and tissues using targeted antibodies. The resulting reaction is visualized under a microscope, enabling the detection of micro-organisms, hormones, tumor markers, and specific cell types.
IHC plays a critical role in the classification and diagnosis of disease, with applications including lymphoma classification, prostate, skin, and breast cancers, hormone receptor status, and soft tissue tumor identification. Our laboratory employs advanced automated IHC techniques, ensuring consistent, high-quality, and reliable diagnostic results for every sample.

Cytopathology

Cytology involves the microscopic examination of cells spread and stained on glass slides to detect disease and abnormalities. Our cytology laboratory processes both gynecological and non-gynecological samples.
Gynecological cytology focuses on cervical cancer screening for asymptomatic patients, while non-gynecological cytology covers a wide range of fluid-based samples, including urine, bladder washes, Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), sputum, bronchial washes, serous fluids, and fine needle aspirates, which are collected quickly, painlessly, and non-invasively.

Intraoperative consultation (also known as frozen section)

A process where a surgeon requests an opinion from the pathologist during an operation to appropriately manage a patient. It involves close collaboration with surgeons and rapid frozen-section processing to guide clinical decision-making at the time of surgery.
Digital Pathology services, including Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) and image analysis, are currently under way to facilitate our work and improve our workflow.
