The charitable multi-specialty pediatric clinic is dedicated to providing essential healthcare services to children who lack access to adequate medical care.

The inauguration event received support from the Community Development Authority and Awqaf Dubai, which played a pivotal role in identifying vulnerable children within the community. This collaboration further strengthened Dubai Health's collective efforts to reach those in need. During the event, the Clinic provided a range of essential health services, including medical examinations, diagnoses, as well as nutritional and dental education tailored specifically for children. To enrich the experience of young patients, the Emirates Literature Foundation organized several reading activities.

Established to enhance the standard of care and advance health for humanity, Dubai Health is the first integrated academic health system in Dubai. Dubai Health, the first integrated academic health system in Dubai, has partnered with the Angelman Syndrome Foundation to establish the GCC’s first dedicated clinic at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital. This is the first-of-its-kind clinic in the region and aims to improve care for patients with Angelman Syndrome and raise awareness of this rare neurological disorder. The clinic will provide a supportive community hub where patients, families and caregivers can connect with experts and receive the best evidence-based care, bridging a gap in healthcare for those living with this condition.  

In line with Dubai Health’s Patient First promise, the partnership with the Angelman Syndrome Foundation represents new hope for individuals and families living with this rare neuro-genetic disorder. Affecting approximately one in 500,000 people worldwide, the early symptoms of Angelman Syndrome include a significant delay in obtaining developmental milestones such as walking within the first 12 months. Other clinical findings include speech delay, movement or balance disorder and often present with an apparent happy demeanor with frequent laughter and excitability.

The clinic will provide families in the UAE access to specialist healthcare professionals and evidence-based care while also enhancing future treatment through the power of Dubai Health’s integrated academic health system. Through harnessing the education and research that takes place within Dubai Health, this partnership aims to significantly improve the lives of patients and their families.

Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which leads the Learning and Discovery missions of Dubai Health, the first integrated academic health system in Dubai, joined forces with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to host the joint conference: Research and Public Health Priorities in the MENA Region: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic and Future Preparedness.

Held at MBRU, the event brought together regional experts and stakeholders from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), alongside counterparts from the U.S. and other regions to exchange insights and foster collaboration in addressing pressing public health challenges.

The U.S. CDC established the MENA Regional Office in Muscat, Oman in 2020 to strengthen public health collaborations in the region and enhance global health security. In addition to the CDC personnel in Muscat, CDC will soon place a Regional Technical Advisor for Emerging Infections and Zoonotic Diseases in Abu Dhabi to support additional efforts in UAE and the region. This presence, along with the NIAID in the region, fosters scientific and public health collaborations with the U.S., and the MENA region, including sharing best practices and innovations, such as this conference.

The conference welcomed approximately 200 delegates, including academics, healthcare practitioners, and public health professionals from 16 countries, including an impressive lineup of nearly 40 speakers and chairs and 40 abstract presenters. Featuring sessions, panel discussions, and abstract presentations, conference topics ranged from reflections on the COVID-19 pandemic's impact and predictions for future outbreaks, to strategies for preparedness and response. The conference also afforded opportunities for networking and collaboration among the participants.

The conference also featured keynotes by notable figures, including Deputy Chief of Mission Eric Gaudiosi, of the U.S. Mission to the UAE; H.E. Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health, and President of MBRU; H.E. Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Deputy CEO of MBRU; from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Henry Walke, Director of the Office of Readiness and Response, Dr. Kayla Laserson, Director for the Global Health Center, Heather Burke, Regional Director, U.S. CDC Middle East/North Africa Regional Office in Muscat, Oman, ; and from NIAID, Dr. Daniel Douek, Senior Investigator and Chief of the Human Immunology Section at the Vaccine Research Center, and Dr. Mohamed H. Sayegh, Senior Scientific Advisor to the Director.

In his opening keynote address, H.E. Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of MBRU, highlighted Dubai's proactive response to the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing upon his role as Chair of the Dubai COVID-19 Command and Control Center. He emphasized the significance of collaboration and working together in a coordinated approach toward advancing healthcare solutions.

He said, “We are proud to host healthcare leaders from all around the region and the U.S. for the Research and Public Health Priorities in the MENA Region conference here in Dubai. A new frontier of opportunities has been created since the COVID-19 pandemic, and now, more than ever, we stand at the cusp of a transformative era, where not only do we reflect upon lessons learned but also to chart new territories in a conducive environment that nurtures collaboration across the entire region and beyond. As Dubai’s first integrated academic health system, we believe that through uniting efforts, we advance health and shape a brighter future for all.”

In his opening remarks, DCM Gaudiosi stated, “Supported by the U.S. COVID-19 response supplemental funding and facilitated by the support of the U.A.E government and the U.S. diplomatic missions in the region, our gathering today focuses on health security, preparedness, and response—a testament to our shared priorities and our collective will to invest in healthier futures.”

Indeed, many of the participants were on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic – from clinicians, incident managers, and leaders in local, national, and global response. It was evident the importance of partnership, sharing of accurate information, forecasting and analytics to inform decision making, and health communications in protecting health not just in emergencies, but also in mass migration events and outbreak response. The conference concluded with energized participants with new and strengthened relationships and ideas for collaboration to predict, prepare, and be ready to respond to the next health threat.

Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) proudly celebrated its students’ successful participation in the international ‘Design for Change’ bootcamp organized by Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. Held in Malaysia and Singapore, this event brought together students from diverse disciplines, including engineering, medicine, and design, to collaboratively develop innovative and sustainable solutions to global healthcare challenges.

MBRU’s inaugural participation was marked by significant achievements, with two students earning awards for Best Pitch and Best Strategy. These accolades underscore the exceptional talent nurtured at MBRU and highlight the university’s commitment to fostering innovation in healthcare.

Dr Yacine Hadjiat, leading Innovation in Health Science and Digital Health at Dubai Health and Associate Professor at the College of Medicine at MBRU shared, “The international bootcamp provided an unparalleled opportunity for our talented MBRU students to experience global diversity in healthcare. More than 100 students from nine universities across Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and the UAE, were challenged to address critical issues in sustainability and healthcare. The students showcased their creativity and problem-solving skills by developing and pitching their own projects. They also had the opportunity to visit various healthcare facilities, learn from experts, and actively collaborate with peers.

Maryam Alabdullah, a medical student at MBRU said, "The Design for Change bootcamp opened my eyes to the possibilities of innovation and collaboration in healthcare. I learned a lot from the different speakers, mentors, and peers who shared their insights and experiences with us. One of the highlights was visiting Taylor's University in Malaysia, where we learned how they use virtual reality.”

DIB's contribution enables Dubai Health to launch an integrated model of cancer care at Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital. Scheduled to open in 2026, the comprehensive care hospital will provide primary care services alongside advanced cancer treatment. This innovative approach will enable earlier detection and intervention, which is proven to optimize outcomes for patients in their cancer journey. The hospital will house multidisciplinary teams, including specialized cancer nurses, offering a full spectrum of services in one location – from diagnosis to treatment to supportive care. Select treatments and services will be made available to patients in the comfort of their homes.

DIB's support for the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital aligns with Dubai Health's mission to enhance patient outcomes through an integrated model of care. A delegation from UMass Chan Medical School, Massachusetts’s first and only public academic health sciences center, recently visited Dubai Health, solidifying a new chapter in healthcare collaboration between the two organizations. The visit, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), granted the delegation the opportunity to gain insight into Dubai’s first integrated academic health system, laying the groundwork for a productive partnership.

Inspired by UMass Chan’s reputation for impact through collaborative endeavour and aspiration to change the course of the history of disease, the partnership reflects a shared vision between the two academic health systems to advance health. Under the agreement, UMass Chan and Dubai Health will establish mutually beneficial research projects to improve patient care, create an exchange framework for learners between the two academic institutions, and drive transformative advancements for public health, both locally and globally.

Led by Michael F. Collins, MD, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and Chancellor at UMass Chan, the visit also included an opportunity for Dubai Health learners to gain insight into elective and residency program opportunities at UMass Chan.

Introduced initially as a parent support program at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, it is understood that a recent diagnosis can be overwhelming for families, often leaving them feeling uncertain and isolated. Now, under Dubai Health, the initiative aims to elevate autism care for children through active participation in the community and harnessing the inherent benefits of the academic health system. Learning experts within Dubai Health have developed concise, research-informed content on a wide range of autism care topics, delivered in a user-friendly microlearning format. These bite-sized pieces of knowledge make it easy for families to fit learning into their busy schedules. The website will also host webinars, translating the latest research insights on autism into practical care strategies for families. Beyond information, the platform also provides a safe and supportive online community forum – a virtual space for families to connect, ask questions, and share valuable insights with one another.

Connecting families, Sharing Knowledge, Transforming Care

Looking ahead, Blue Cafe is brewing something special. In the coming months, a physical café in Dubai will open its doors, offering a welcoming space for families and caregivers to gather. All proceeds from this cafe will directly fund research initiatives dedicated to improving autism care.

Speaking on the initiative, Professor Nabil Zary, Senior Director of the Institute of Learning (IOL) at Dubai Health, said, “Blue Cafe was born from a desire to support the well-being of children with autism. Dubai Health, the first integrated academic health system in Dubai, has announced the inauguration of the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics, supported by Al Tayer Group. Located at Latifa Hospital, the new Center will manage high-risk pregnancies and deliver specialized care and monitoring for expecting mothers.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Chairperson of Al Jalila Foundation Board of Directors and Dubai Health Board Member, H.E. Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, Dr. Muna Tahlak, Chief Medical Officer at Dubai Health and CEO of Latifa Hospital, and Mr. Ahmed Al Tayer, Director of Al Tayer Group, alongside several senior officials of both entities.

Al Tayer Group has generously contributed 4 million dirhams through Al Jalila Foundation, which leads the giving mission of Dubai Health to establish the Center in honor of Shaikha Abdula bin Kalban. This contribution aims to bolster Dubai Health's commitment to delivering patient-centered care through its integrated academic health system.

The new Center is equipped with advanced, high-precision technology to ensure comprehensive care for the most complex and sensitive cases. Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, presented a comprehensive overview of Dubai's first integrated academic health system model to over 150 industry thought leaders and officials from the UAE and abroad. Drawing parallels with globally renowned institutions adopting similar models, Dr. Amer shared exclusive insights on the work being undertaken by Dubai Health. Dubai Health was established to elevate the standard of care and to advance health for humanity. Dubai Health comprises six hospitals, 26 ambulatory health centers, 20 medical fitness centers, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Al Jalila Foundation through the integration of care, learning, discovery, and giving. For the first time in the UAE, the Emirates Society of Haematology (ESH), supported by Dubai Health, joined forces with the George Washington University to present the Emirates Hematology Best Practices Updates. The event was held last month and offered a thorough review course covering a wide range of topics in both benign and malignant hematology.

Distinguished speakers from top institutions delivered a series of engaging lectures and posed review board questions covering a wide spectrum of topics, including platelet and bleeding disorders, hematologic complications during pregnancy, bone marrow transplants and more. Each day, participants engaged in audience response questions and dynamic case discussions across various domains of hematology-oncology, fostering interactive and enriching learning experiences.

Dr. Asma Sultan Alolama, Program Director of the Adult Hematology Fellowship program at Dubai Health, President of ESH and Consultant Hematologist at Dubai Hospital, expressed her pride in achieving the establishment of this Best Practice Update for the UAE within an impressive timeframe of just three months. “Drawing more than 100 participants not only from the UAE but also from other GCC countries, this event stands as a significant milestone for the country and the wider region, representing the first instance of George Washington University convening course outside the USA.”

As Dubai’s first integrated academic health system, Dubai Health aims to contribute towards Dubai's pursuit of a sustainable, knowledge-based economy, supporting the growth and performance of the health sector.

Al Jalila Foundation, Emarat Al Youm newspaper, and the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities (IACAD) Department in Dubai, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch Your Donation Saves Lives, the second edition of an initiative to support patients in need of kidney transplantation in Dubai. The fundraising campaign urges businesses, entrepreneurs, and community members to embrace the initiative and offer essential support to those in need.

The MoU was signed by Executive Director of the Charitable Sector, Mohamed Musabih

of the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai; Dr. Amer Al Zarooni, Chief Executive Officer of  Al Jalila Foundation; and Saud Al Darbi, Head of the News and Publishing Centre at Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI). The signing took place in the presence of Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health.

Al Jalila Foundation, which leads Dubai Health's giving mission, will be responsible for identifying patients within Dubai Health’s healthcare facilities, including Dubai Hospital, Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, and Mediclinic City Hospital. Al Jalila Foundation will provide the healthcare facilities with comprehensive details about the patients, their medical conditions, and the funds required for transplants and post-operative care. Furthermore, they will take measures to ensure that these cases receive timely support from the initiative.

As a strategic partner, Emarat Al Youm newspaper will be responsible for transferring donations and contributions received through a hotline service. IACAD has pledged to collaborate with all parties and distribute donations to Dubai Health patients, identified by Al Jalila Foundation.

His Excellency Ahmed Darwish Al Muhairi, Director General of the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai, confirmed that signing the MoU with Al Jalila Foundation and Emarat Al Youm newspaper supports the national agenda for achieving a better life for citizens and residents of the UAE, helping to empower and further humanitarian work in line with the vision of the wise leadership for supporting the spirit of giving in humanitarian work locally, regionally, and internationally. He explained that it also encourages community members to save lives and improve the quality of life of patients with organ failure, helping them return to being productive members of society.

New fellowship programs in Pediatric Nephrology and Vascular Neurology 

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, 15 JAN 2025: Dubai Health announced the opening of registration for its graduate medical education programs, including internship, residency, and fellowship training, at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU). For the first time, fellowship programs in Pediatric Nephrology and Vascular Neurology will be offered, aiming to develop highly skilled specialists and enhance healthcare education.

Professor Sulaiman AlEmran, Dean of Graduate Medical Education at MBRU, commented: “At Dubai Health, we are committed to delivering exceptional programs that enhance the expertise and capabilities of healthcare professionals. These initiatives reflect our dedication to preparing the next generation of leaders who will contribute to the advancement of the healthcare sector, and the addition of new programs reinforces our focus on delivering world-class medical education aligned with the highest international standards.”

Currently, MBRU offers 39 graduate medical education programs, including 20 residencies, 17 fellowships, and two internships. All are accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), the National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS) in the UAE, and the Arab Board of Health Specializations.

Dr. Rasha Buhumaid, Vice Dean of Graduate Medical Education at MBRU, commented: “The new fellowship programs in Pediatric Nephrology and Vascular Neurology are valuable additions to our programs offerings, reflecting Dubai Health’s commitment to an integrated educational and research environment. The application deadline for residency programs is March 27, while internship and fellowship programs remain open until May 15.

The meeting, held at MBRU, was attended by Her Excellency Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, His Excellency Abdulla Abdul Rahman Al Shaibani, Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, His Excellency Waleed Saeed Al Awadhi, Mohammed Hassan Al Shehhi, Dr. Amer Sharif, CEO of Dubai Health, and Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali representing MBRU.
During the meeting, the board reviewed significant projects and achievements from the previous term, reaffirming Dubai Health's commitment to elevating healthcare standards and innovation in line with the Dubai Social Agenda 33.
A Decade of Partnership with Queen's University Belfast
The board also celebrated a decade of partnership between MBRU and Queen's University Belfast (QUB). Established in 2015, the collaboration was built on a shared vision for advancing healthcare education and research.
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum praised this partnership, highlighting it as a model for international academic cooperation, demonstrating Dubai Health’s commitment to positioning Dubai as a global healthcare hub. In recognition of this successful partnership, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum honoured Professor Sir Ian Andrew Greer, Dubai Health Board Member and Chancellor of QUB, for his contributions to strengthening the collaboration between the two universities. Hall mentioned that the exhibition will enter a new phase of expansion starting from the next edition, with its new name, ‘World Health Expo Dubai (WHX Dubai),’ which is scheduled to be held at Expo Dubai.

The gala dinner’s programme showcased a variety of exceptional Emirati talents. To commemorate the occasion, souvenirs inspired by traditional Emirati culture, which were designed by Emirati artist Hessa Alghandi, were gifted to reflect the enduring impact of Arab Health through half a century. The Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) have initiated a landmark specialized training program in cell culture techniques for Emirati astronauts. This strategic initiative will equip astronauts to conduct groundbreaking research experiments, driving advancements in human health and equipping the nation’s space pioneers with the critical expertise needed for future missions.

Under the mentorship of leading experts at MBRU, three Emirati astronauts—Hazzaa AlMansoori, Astronauts Office Manager at MBRSC, Nora AlMatrooshi, and Mohammad AlMulla—successfully completed the intensive program. The rigorous training encompassed fundamental cell culture techniques, essential for biological research that involves maintaining and growing cells outside their original environment. Additionally, they underwent specialized glovebox training, a critical component that ensures safe and effective scientific experimentation in the unique environment of space.

The training program not only highlights the exceptional facilities and expertise available at MBRU but also marks a significant milestone in the UAE's journey to becoming a leader in space exploration and research. By equipping Emirati astronauts with these vital skills, the UAE is poised to make substantial contributions to the global scientific community, driving forward the frontiers of space and health research.

Over the course of the training, the astronauts engaged in lectures and hands-on practical sessions, covering the basics of mammalian cell culture, tissue culture laboratory setup, and the use of various laboratory equipment and reagents. The astronauts also practiced essential techniques such as pipetting, media preparation, cell viability assessment, cell counting, media changing, cell passing, and cell freezing and thawing. Additionally, they received specialized training on using the Glovebox and conducting independent practice under supervision, including troubleshooting and dealing with unexpected situations.

Professor Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Deputy CEO and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU, said, "Life sciences research in space is playing an ever-important role in advancing the future of patient care. Hazzaa AlMansoori, Astronauts Office Manager, MBRSC, said, “We trained on the process of stem cell transplantation and how to use laboratory tools in space, which will serve us in future space missions to the Moon and Mars. Our collaboration with MBRU is a crucial step in ensuring we are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in our roles as astronauts and ambassadors of the UAE’s growing presence in space exploration."

Astronaut Nora AlMatrooshi, describing the hands-on experiences in the laboratory, said, “We delved into the intricate process of thawing and freezing cells, gaining practical skills in handling them using various laboratory equipment. This training has allowed us to further develop our scientific skills and understanding.”

Astronaut Mohammad AlMulla said: “Our training was composed of several distinct stages. We began by learning about different types and classifications of cells, including their growth patterns and preservation methods. Furthermore, we received hands-on training in cell division and storage, preparing us for future missions.”

Dr. Mohamed Jamal, Stem Cell Researcher and Lead for the MRAT Program at MBRU said, “We were honored to collaborate with MBRSC and contribute to the UAE’s space ambitions during the thorough the program. Building on our current collaboration we have developed a program to equip the astronauts with the essential skills and knowledge to perform cutting-edge research in the field of stem cells and molecular biology. The astronauts demonstrated remarkable dedication and enthusiasm throughout the training. We hope that this program will inspire more young Emiratis to pursue careers in STEM fields and join the national efforts to advance space discovery and scientific innovation.”

The program builds on MBRU’s growing legacy of supporting space travel in the UAE, with Dr. Hanan Alsuwaidi, Dubai Health's Chief Business Officer, serving as flight surgeon for UAE astronauts H.E. Dr. Sultan Saif AlNeyadi and Hazzaa AlMansoori who conducted research projects from MBRU aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
