Genetics is fast-becoming a vital part of modern healthcare, and genetic counselling plays an essential, integrative role in patient care. At Al Jalila Children’s, our pediatric genetic counselling team takes a holistic approach, working closely with multiple departments to help physicians order relevant genetic tests, support families through the testing process, and interpret results with consideration of the patient’s family history.

We offer our services to healthcare providers across the Dubai Health network, through our state-of-the-art Genomics Center. We assist in selecting the right genetic tests and providing family counselling, aiming to deliver the most relevant results quickly and cost-effectively. Our genetic counsellors work alongside physicians to select the most relevant tests, and to ensure accurate diagnoses and support. Once a diagnosis is made, we meet with families to discuss genetic results and any health implications, and help coordinate referrals to the most appropriate specialists for ongoing care.

What to expect during your visit with a genetic counselor

When you meet with one of our genetic counselors, they will explain the basics of genetics to help you understand the purpose of the test and what the results could mean for you and your family. We will ask questions to take a detailed family history to help identify any potential genetic conditions that might run in your family. This helps guide the testing process.

Before any testing is done, your counselor will go over the test with you and answer any questions you have. We want to make sure you feel confident and comfortable moving forward.

Once the test resultsare ready, your counselor will meet with you to explain the findings, discuss how they may affect your family, and answer any questions. If needed, we will help you find support and connect you to the right specialists for any further care.
