Specialized pediatric eye care for a bright future

Welcome to our Pediatric Ophthalmology department where we specialize in caring for your children’s vision and eye health. Our pediatric ophthalmologists and team are experts in child visual development, and in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that can affect your child’s vision while growing up.

We know that children have unique needs when it comes to eye care, and our experienced team is dedicated to providing compassionate, specialized care for a wide range of children's ocular conditions. From routine eye exams and prescribing glasses, to managing common and more complex eye conditions, we’re committed to helping your child achieve their best possible vision for a bright and healthy future.

What to expect during your child's visit

On your appointment day, your child will be seen by several pediatric eye specialists for a series of tests, so we ask you to be prepared for what may be quite a long day. Please also bring along the following with you:

  • Your child’s glasses, if they wear them
  • Any relevant medical reports
  • Any medication your child is currently taking
  • Sunglasses or a hat (if dilating drops are used, eyes may be sensitive to light for some hours)

Dilating drops

At the start of your visit, one of our eye specialists will gently put dilating drops in your child’s eyes in preparation for their tests. These might sting for a few seconds, but are completely harmless - they are used to relax the eye muscles and enlarge the pupils so that we can thoroughly examine all parts of the eyes. It takes between 30-60 minutes for the drops to work, and your child may be a bit sensitive to light and experience blurry vision for a few hours afterwards - this is completely normal and is why we recommend you bring their sunglasses with you.

Eye and vision tests

Depending on your child’s age, our ophthalmology team will carry out a comprehensive set of tests once the dilating drops have got to work. For babies under the age of one year, we check how well your baby’s eyes are working together and how they move, we will also check their vision to see if there are any signs of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or amblyopia. For older children, they’ll get to do visual acuity tests through charts, pictures and games.
