Dubai Health kidney transplant programme delivers impressive outcomes, with success rate topping 95% after 234 cases
Dubai Health announced the successful completion of 234 kidney transplant surgeries since the launch of its kidney transplant programme in 2016, achieving a success rate of over 95 percent and highlighting the impact of cross-sector collaboration.
Dubai Health’s kidney transplant programme is delivered in cooperation with federal, local, and private-sector partners, including the Ministry of Health and Prevention, Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Healthcare City Authority, Dubai Airports, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, Dubai Customs, the Dubai Police General Command, Dubai Public Prosecution, and Mediclinic City Hospital, alongside other private healthcare partners. This initiative supports the national Hayat Program for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue, enabling access to life-saving treatments.
Since its inception, the programme has facilitated 234 transplants for patients of diverse nationalities, with children accounting for 31.2 percent of recipients. Of these procedures, 120 were performed at Dubai Health hospitals, 90 at Mediclinic City Hospital, and 24 at Al Qassimi Hospital.
His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), said: “These efforts highlight a collaborative approach across sectors in organ transplantation and reaffirm our commitment to delivering specialised care. They also embody our leadership’s vision of placing human health at the forefront of priorities, reinforcing Dubai’s position in the field.”
Dr. Sharif added: “Guided by our ‘Patient First’ promise, we are committed to ensuring that every patient is given access to comprehensive treatment. This approach reflects a model of care and giving, where the programmes of Al Jalila Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dubai Health, play a vital role in contributing to a better quality of life.”
The transplant recipients included patients of all ages, with kidneys donated by both living and deceased donors, reflecting growing community awareness of the life-saving importance of organ donation.
Multidisciplinary care
All transplant procedures at Dubai Health are delivered through coordinated, multidisciplinary care aligned with the highest standards and supported by comprehensive assessment, surgical treatment, and structured long-term follow-up.
Al Jalila Foundation supports patients through a range of healthcare programmes, including its ‘Your Donation Saves Lives’ initiative, which encourages organ donation and helps fund transplant treatment. To date, the programme has covered the treatment costs of 66 patients, representing 31.4 percent of all transplant patients in Dubai. In addition, the ‘A’awen’ programme provides essential support for patients who are unable to access or afford specialised care. Together, these initiatives showcase Dubai Health’s commitment to advancing health for humanity.
Dubai Health provides specialised care for patients with kidney failure across its facilities, including Dubai Hospital, Al Jalila Children’s Hospital, Al Twar Dialysis Center, and Al Barsha Dialysis Center.
Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences Expands Academic Pathways in Nursing
Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), the learning and discovery arm of Dubai Health, has introduced new nursing education programs through the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery (HBMCoNM). The expansion aims to advance medical education and align with global standards in this vital field.
Dr. Hanan Al Suwaidi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Academic Officer at Dubai Health, and Provost of MBRU, said: “Developing highly skilled nursing professionals is essential to strengthening national healthcare capacity. Through the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery, MBRU is expanding the academic pathways that prepare nurses to contribute to vital roles across the healthcare system ".
Expanded Academic Pathways in Nursing
MBRU’s nursing education pathways now span from undergraduate study to specialized academic training, beginning with the newly introduced Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Building on this foundation, students can specialize through a Master’s, Postgraduate Diploma, or Postgraduate Certificate in four fields: Cardiovascular Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Emergency Care Nursing, and Paediatric Nursing. Together, these offerings provide a comprehensive academic route for nurses seeking to build advanced clinical expertise.
Professor Nezam Al Nsair, Dean of the Hind Bint Maktoum College of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “Our expanded academic offerings provide clear, structured pathways for nurses to build advanced clinical competencies. By integrating specialized postgraduate options with strong foundations in clinical training, we are ensuring that graduates are ready to contribute effectively from day one. In addition to the academic offerings at HBMCoNM, the College of Medicine at MBRU continues to offer a range of advanced academic degrees, including a six-year undergraduate Doctor of Medicine program, a four-year undergraduate Graduate Entry Doctor of Medicine program, a Master of Science and PhD in Biomedical Sciences, and a Master’s and Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions Education. The Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine offers five postgraduate programs in Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontology, Pediatric Dentistry, and Orthodontics.
At MBRU, students have access to Dubai Health’s research facilities and receive hands-on clinical training in its hospitals, ensuring their education is closely linked to real-world healthcare practice, and high standards of patient care.

Dubai Health’s Genomic Medicine Center Earns CAP Accreditation
Dubai Health announced that its Genomic Medicine Center (GMC) has earned accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the globally-recognized authority in laboratory quality assurance, marking a significant milestone that reflects its commitment to the highest global standards of quality, accuracy, and safety.
This accreditation is awarded following a precise evaluation conducted by a panel of experts to verify laboratories’ compliance with internationally recognized standards in the field. It is considered one of the world’s leading medical laboratory quality assurance programs, aimed at achieving the highest levels of excellence in laboratory practices.
Dr. Ahmad Abou Tayoun, Director of the Genomic Medicine Center at Dubai Health, expressed his profound pride in the center’s achievement in obtaining accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), a milestone that reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to the highest internationally recognized quality standards and its dedication to providing high-quality services to patients and physicians. He added that this recognition further strengthens the center’s position as a leading hub for genomic medicine and advanced research.
Dr. Abou Tayoun further explained that Dubai Health’s Genomic Medicine Center supports the overall healthcare system, from analyzing genomic data to providing consultation and follow-up for individuals and families. This approach enables medical professionals to make precise, evidence-based treatment decisions. The center also provides a comprehensive range of genetic tests and analyses through its molecular genetics, genomics, and cytogenetics laboratories, including genetic diagnosis of heredity conditions and rare diseases and the premarital genetic screening program. Al Jalila Children’s Hospital Rings the ‘Bell of Hope’ in Celebration of Five-Year-Old Alexis’s Recovery from Cancer
Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi: More than 60 patients have successfully completed their treatment since the launch of the pediatric oncology unit in April 2023.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, XX December 2025: Dubai Health’s Al Jalila Children’s Hospital celebrated an inspiring moment as five-year-old Alexis O’Shea rang the hospital’s “Bell of Hope,” marking the end of her treatment and the beginning of a brighter chapter ahead. The ceremony, the hospital’s first, symbolizes the completion of a child’s cancer journey and the start of recovery filled with renewed strength and optimism.
This milestone moment crowned a nine-month treatment journey that began when Alexis was diagnosed with an advanced Wilms tumor that had spread to her lungs. She underwent an intensive and expertly coordinated treatment plan that included chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy, overseen by a multidisciplinary team of pediatric surgeons, oncologists, therapists, nurses, and child-life specialists.
Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of the Women and Children’s Campus at Dubai Health, said: “Alexis’s recovery reflects Dubai Health’s commitment to delivering child-centered, integrated care that addresses medical, emotional, and social needs. Her journey highlights the essential role of multidisciplinary coordination, where expertise, compassion, and our ‘Patient First’ promise come together at every stage of treatment.”
He added that Dubai Health remains dedicated to advancing the quality of pediatric care through comprehensive clinical, rehabilitative, and psychosocial programs that support patients and their families from diagnosis to full recovery. Since the launch of the pediatric oncology unit in April 2023, more than 60 patients have successfully completed their treatment, a reflection of the care teams’ dedication and the growing impact of these services.
Dr. Dermot Murphy, Consultant Pediatric Oncologist at Dubai Health, said: “Alexis’s story is one of hope, courage, and determination. Her progress reminds us that with the right care, the right support, and a united team, children can overcome even the most challenging diagnoses.”
He continued: “Her treatment brought together a team of specialists working in close coordination to ensure she received the highest level of care. For us, it was never just about treating an illness, it was about caring for a young girl and supporting her family every step of the way. When the child comes first, every decision becomes more meaningful.”

Dubai, UAE 10 December 2025: Dubai Health successfully convened the second edition of the Dubai Health Research Conference 2025. The event brought together physicians, experts, and academics to present the latest in medical research, reinforcing Dubai’s position in advancing scientific research.
His Excellency Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, attended the conference and honored researchers recognized in the “Best Oral Presentation” and “Best Research Poster” categories. The event was also attended by Professor Ian Bruce, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at Queen's University Belfast, and His Excellency Dr. Amer Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Health and President of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU).
Held over three days at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, the conference featured a series of scientific discussions, presentations, and workshops focused on research to improve health outcomes.
The conference aimed to provide a platform for showcasing pioneering medical advancements and enhancing networking opportunities among researchers and healthcare specialists. Professor Andrew Beggs, Professor of Cancer Genetics and Surgery in the Department of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom highlighted methods of developing precision medicine. Professor Manuel Salto-Tellez, Professor of Molecular Pathology at Queen’s University Belfast, explored the applications of personalized medicine in oncology.
The event also showcased the latest scientific research across Dubai Health’s integrated academic health system, connecting researchers, professionals, and trainees to improve clinical outcomes. Presentations highlighted clinical research in genomic medicine, digital health, artificial intelligence, microbiome science, and women’s health.
Mansoor bin Mohammed donates blood in support of the ‘My Blood, for My Country’ campaign
His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai's Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management, and Vice Chairman of Dubai Health’s Board of Directors, has reaffirmed that blood donation is a humanitarian duty and a national responsibility that reflects the noble values of the UAE.
His Highness Sheikh Mansoor said: “The ‘My Blood, for My Country’ campaign serves as an inspiring model for meaningful community partnerships that strengthen our healthcare system. The growing awareness around the importance of blood donation demonstrates that the culture of giving has become an integral part of our society. We encourage all members of our community to participate in the campaign and amplify its life-saving impact.”
His Highness made these remarks as he donated blood at the Dubai Health Blood Donation Center, personally demonstrating his support of voluntary blood donation.

Organised in partnership with Al Ameen Service, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Dubai Health, and Emarat Al Youm newspaper, the campaign aims to provide blood units for patients, ensure sufficient supplies for the Thalassemia Center, and promote a culture of voluntary blood donation.
His Excellency Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, said: “The participation of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reflects his continued support for health and community initiatives and his commitment to encouraging blood donation. His Excellency also reaffirmed DHA’s commitment to strengthening the voluntary blood donation system and supporting programmes that enhance healthcare readiness.

Omar Al Falasi, General Supervisor of Al Ameen Service, reaffirmed that the ‘My Blood, for My Country’ campaign continues to strengthen the spirit of solidarity in the community through its messages of giving, humanitarian action, and encouraging community-led initiatives.
He said: “For more than a decade, this campaign has delivered positive outcomes for society. It has been essential for both donors and patients, contributing to disease prevention and advancing public health in the UAE. Al Ameen Service remains committed to supporting efforts that protect the safety and well-being of the community.”
Ibrahim Shukrallah, Editor-in-Chief of Emarat Al Youm, said that the blood donation made by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum represents an inspiring model of humanitarian action. “Our partnership in this campaign stems from a deep sense of social responsibility. We are committed to raising awareness and promoting blood donation as a life-saving humanitarian act.”
The ‘My Blood, for My Country’ campaign seeks to attract new, particularly first-time, blood donors to expand the Donation Center’s database, especially among individuals with rare blood types. The campaign also focuses on encouraging young people aged 18 to 30 to donate, promoting blood donation as part of a healthy lifestyle. The campaign also encourages both government and private entities to participate in blood donation drives, fostering a culture of giving, and building an inclusive and supportive community network.
